Tuesday: WTF, the USPS?

I haven't been getting mail.  Any mail.  Which recently struck me as "unusual."  Yesterday I put a note in my mailbox asking WTF was going on, and after not hearing anything back, I went to the local post office to ask them WTF was going on.  There I was told that I had to register at the post office, so they know I live there now.  Besides that, they want to change the lock on the mailbox before they'll deliver mail, to prevent mail theft.  This is something I've never heard of, and it's dumb, and now I have to wonder if things I've ordered won't arrive because they've been returned.  One of the reasons I looked into this is that I was expecting an order, and the tracking information said it was undeliverable.  Luckily, they had it at the post office, so I was able to get my package of 61 purple hair ties.

They're thicker than my old set of purple hair ties, but less dark.  They're more lavender or lilac or something.  Still works.
Continuing my theme of mail-related shenanigans, today was payday, and it turns out if you don't arrange direct deposit, they just put the check in your work mailbox.  Cool.  Now I don't feel poor, although my rent will be taken out tomorrow.  Hopefully I can get the moving reimbursement soon to take care of that.

Plus, I had an email that I had boxes in the mail room.  I went to check, and my two monitors for work were waiting.  I'm hoping the actual system arrives tomorrow, because I'd like to switch away from my laptop as soon as possible.  There was also a third box which should have had my external backup drive.  Instead I found this:
That's not right.
So we'll see how this all works out.  The tech person in charge of ordering had never seen this happen, either.

Finally, I looked into switching things over from CVS to git.  It doesn't seem too hard, the biggest issue is sorting out how I want to organize things.  I think my plan is to set up year-based project repositories under a ~/project directory, with some common files either there or in the ~/usr/share directory in a ~/usr repository that will also hold all my scripts and things.  One thing I think this will help with is the inevitable drift between versions on different hosts.  I can put each host on a different branch, and do periodic merges to keep things consistent.

Monday: A firehouse

After spending longer than expected at work trying to finish things, I didn't want to have to deal with making dinner.

There's a Firehouse nearby-ish.  I'm thinking now that I should have gotten the big sandwich.
Then I went to a grocery store I'm probably never going back to, but now I have dinner for the rest of the week planned out.

Sunday: A pizza day.

Because I really felt like pizza.
And then I got groceries, and only forgot one thing.  I did discover that Wegman's has a prepared/mostly prepared food section I've missed, which is wonderful.  A two pack of chocolate cheesecake slices?  Yes, thank you.

Saturday: A Lazy Day

I did take out all my cardboard, finally.  And I got sushi, finally.

So excited!
The place near me is all-you-can-eat.  Which seems odd, but I guess that's popular here.  I probably should have tried more stuff.
Fried stuff.
The gyoza are gyoza.  Not the absolute best, but good.  Tempura sweet potato was very good, and I should have had more.  The chicken was a surprise.  Like a fancy panko crusted chicken finger.

Sushi time.
Well.  I think they focus on rolls, because they have a bunch of their own.  The spicy fried roll was good, but cooked ahi isn't my favorite.  The California roll was a bit odd, with larger kani chunks.  Tamago is tamago.  The unagi was fine, if a bit small.  The ahi was also small, and not very flavorful.  Probably not super surprising given the AYCE style, since it wouldn't be too hard to break the bank.

Dessert gyoza.  And shumai.  They never brought my ice cream.
I'll probably be back.  They have not AYCE stuff, and their unagi don and bentos sound good.  No katsu don, though.  It looks like there are places in Princeton Junction that do.

Friday: So close. Also: Always triple down on your revenge. That's the best solution.

I almost had my first big merge at work today.  But then review took too long, and subsequent testing took too long, and I had to leave work at six.  This was probably good, as people noticed that there was incomplete stuff that snuck through.  So that's next week's plan.  Plus this gives time to sort out all the documentation.

I had to leave at six because I had a ticket to see Titus Andronicus in Madison, NJ.

At the theater specifically for that.

It was a gym, as well.

I had good seat.  In the front row.  Dead center.
Thanks, robot seat-mo-tron.

Titus Andronicus is the story of one guy who should have been smarter, some baddies, and the revenge that happens.  It's a tragedy, so, obviously, everyone dies.  This was a good show.  I think this may be my favorite Shakespeare play now.  There are obvious story issues that probably wouldn't fly today.  Aaron the Moor is a bit...let's say "dated."

And then I came home, and it was quarter after midnight.  I should go to bed.

Thursday: It's always good when you figure out a big problem.

So I think that solves this week's main work project.

It's also good when you get a doughnut.

Or two.

And luck into an empty gym slot.

Wednesday: I probably shouldn't have tacos for three meals in a row.

But I did.  Oh well.

And I had ice cream in my "Feeling bear" bowl.  I probably should have taken the picture before having the ice cream.

  • W.T.F.
  • No longer an Oceanarium.
  • Huh.  So maybe I'll read this.  It sounds like they're doing a bit of a fix up on Carol's character, after she got stomped on during the cross overs.

Tuesday: Today is when I remembered I have a freezer, but forgot I don't have a microwave.

Which works out to a wash, I think.  In any case, I got tired of my old leftovers, and had the idea to make tacos.  So I could put the old leftovers into the freezer, but I have no easy way to reheat my leftover taco stuff tomorrow.

But I had yummy tacos.
Baby lettuce, oven dried tomatoes, avocado, cheese, salsa, tortilla chips all mushed up, taco meat (using this seasoning still, even though I have to look it up every time I use it), all squished into tortillas.  I eventually got lazy, mixed everything up in the bowl, and then just spooned stuff into the tortillas (with the lettuce done separately).  It was good.  And I have a batch made up for tomorrow's lunch, so I'm looking forward to that.

Monday: Almost fully functional.

Yesterday the power went out a few times while it was raining.  The cable went out as well, which meant I was cut off from the internet as well.  The power went off a few more times this morning, and the internet didn't come back online until about 9am.  This gave me a quick chance to figure out if the network was fully set up.

It almost worked.
I had the firewall set to not do forwarding, so heimdall was cut off from the rest of the network.  That's fixed, and saved, so now the only thing I need to do is reboot h so I can set the BIOS to boot on power up (so power outages just cause a reboot).

Sunday: Everything hurts.

But I have furniture now.  It only took all day to put it together.
But a couch.

And a bed.

The couch fits well.

I didn't finish the table and chairs.  I'll get to them this week.  Similarly I'll get rid of the trash and boxes this week.
I didn't eat anything until like 8pm.  I probably should have done that instead of making furniture all day.
So I got a burrito.

Saturday: This waking up early on the weekends thing is like a brand new world of getting things done.

Things I got done today:

  1. Woke up when a computer called me to let me know my furniture will be delivered tomorrow between 9am and 1pm.  This is a much better time frame than the 9am-9pm I initially had.  Also I'm happy that they are delivering tomorrow.
  2. Went out to buy a lamp.  I'm not super happy with the lamp I got, but I can adjust how bright it is, and it was always going to live in the corner and make the living room not cave-like, so it's not a big deal.

  1. Finally got post-it notes so I have scrap paper to write little notes on.  This is a big deal.
  2. Bought a mattress pad, since I don't like not having multiple layers between the mattress and me.  This one claims to be "cool."  I hope that's true.
  3. Tested out the local by-the-slice pizzeria.  The pizza is good.

  1. Made it home before the rain began.
  2. Assembled lamp.

  1. Installed sshd on, heimdall, the TV computer, giving it the ability to be remotely managed.
  2. Installed RSS database and software on heimdall, so I can transfer that off my old work computer.
  3. Relaxed firewall rules to allow me to actually access the RSS feeds.
  4. Set up hostname management, making heimdall the new kadatheron.
  5. Tested out screen casting with the new TV.

  1. Did minor cleaning and decorating.
  2. Covered more shelves in shelf paper, discovering in the process that I need to buy 99 more rolls of shelf paper.
Tomorrow I plan to get my furniture, maybe make cookies, and maybe make bacon so I can maybe have bltac sandwiches.

Friday: Oh, that makes it a lot simpler.

I mean, that looks like a regular scan.
I have to turn in receipts, and the water company people want a copy of my lease.  I remembered that there was a program that did automatic transforms of papers photographed with your phone, and reinstalled it on my tablet.  It does a pretty decent job, especially given that this was with the automatic black-and-white default.  So I guess I can send this stuff in tomorrow, instead of trying to find a scanner or fax machine or some other ancient technology that shouldn't be important at all in 2018.

And my ear hurts, and it sucks, but I don't have a good way to fix it right now.  It sucks.  It shouldn't interfere with my weekend plans, though, since that involves:

  1. Seeing if I can find a floor lamp that isn't made of suck.
  2. Buying some sort of scrap paper, probably a set of multi-color post-it notes, because I need to write down random shit way more than I would expect.
  3. I kind of want doughnuts, but I bought some english muffins today, because I couldn't find any bagels at the store.
So donk.

Thursday: It's always a good sign when the build succeeds, and the tests 99% pass on the first try.

Which suggests tomorrow will mostly be a day of picking up the last bits.  I'm reasonably sure I have the commit process down now too.

A squirrel friend!
The cluster was also down today for maintenance, so I was able to sort out my health insurance, set up my utility account, and order tickets to see Shakespeare next Friday.

Wednesday, July 18, 2018

Wednesday: I'm super tired.

But I kind of want to make a sandwich.  I'm undecided.

Today was also the day I made my first code changes.  I haven't committed them, and they need to be reviewed and more fully tested, but it's nice to feel like I'm contributing.

"So, what I'm thinking, is that we make each evolution progressively worse, with the third one just being some nightmare clown/walrus."

I'm a bit concerned that I'm not getting furniture delivered this weekend.  I would have expected to receive confirmation about things by now, so maybe it'll just be a surprise?  Yay, surprise furniture?

Tuesday: Internet Day!

The best day ever!

Also vacuum day.  Which is cool, and now I know I probably could have taken the vacuum apart in Alameda and saved me $45, but whatever.  I can vacuum my floors now.  I also probably should remember not to answer my door with a box cutter in the future.  I was cleaning up my recycling, which surprisingly, I was able to do in a single trip.  Including all my bin recycling, and the trash.

Having actual internet is great, because I can listen to a youtube video of a song I heard this morning while watching a youtube video I would have watched a long ago if I'd had internet constantly.

The internet hookup went reasonably well, with the install guy having to do only a few tests and things before it was up and running.  I then spent way too much time trying to configure the wifi router to use a static upstream IP address before just giving up and installing a dhcpd server to give it the IP address.  I think I've made the parameters permanent, but I may have to reconfigure wireless if the power goes out again.

Which it did today.

Because it was raining.  A lot.  Like a proper thunderstorm.
While driving, I've set my radio to remember something like four NPR stations.  Also one "other" station that I first thought was the university station, a random techno station, and a 70s funk station.  It turns out to be something of all of those, so here are songs I've heard and had google identify for me.

I should maybe find a way to get these albums.

Monday: what is it with losing keys today?

I had a dream last night that my keys were missing, and then this evening I came inside after getting something from my car and was sure I had locked my keys in the car.  Turns out they were in my hand, so that's a tragedy avoided.

Tomorrow is internet day, and I can barely walk.  I also ordered more furniture, so hopefully Sunday will be bed and couch day.  I miss having a bed, and the floor is no match for a couch.

I don't think I've gotten a rerun yet from Colby. That's a lot of new pokestops.

Oh, also, I made dinner tonight despite having to replace a bunch of ingredients.  I'm tempted to say this was even better. Now the only problem is that I made this in anticipation of having leftovers for dinner later this week, but forgot I don't have a microwave, so I'm going to have to sorry our oven reheating.

Sunday: I needed a day to do nothing

So I woke up, went back to bed, got lunch, went back to bed, made cookies, did a quick clean, and now I'm going back to bed again.  Not having internet has put me back into the dark ages.  It's like 1247 here.

 With stand mixers.
 And buttsed cookie dough.
 And vindaloo leftovers for tomorrow.
 And cookies!
And a salad and grilled cheese for dinner.
And oddly targeted ads on Tumblr.
And evening coloring time, because there's nothing to do.
And art sent by internet poke-friends, because even no internet actually just means "only your usual omnipresent level of internet."  But, you know, without the big screens.

Saturday: everything hurts

It's a combination of walking more fitting the week than I have in a long time, sleeping on the floor, and spending theth hours this evening putting together IKEA furniture.  Still, the first is probably a good thing, the second is improved more than I expected by the shikibuton I bought this week, and even though I don't have anyone to sit yet, having any furniture is an improvement.

 The fabled IKEA.
Planning a couch. My original design was going to be too wide. So love seat plus chaise.
 I had to have meatballs.
 Plusle and Minim? Ok.
 Pandy nursery.
So that's where that picture in the one apartment I looked at came from.
But eventually, I got the TV stand built, and all the network stuff sorted.  I think I'm going to try and upgrade the TV computer tomorrow.
Two bookshelves. The plan is to have these before the couch, possibly with a floor lamp.  I haven't found one I like, though.
U have a lot of recycling to take out tomorrow.  And then dinner.
 Samosas.
Lamb vindaloo.

Tomorrow is cookie day, and I bought all the ingredients for that.  If I'd been smart, I'd have gotten milk and bacon so I could make pancakes and eggs tomorrow for breakfast.
