Sunday: Well I guess I'm watching Frozen again.

So here are some Frozen thoughts.

1) Is the royal family of Arendelle also in charge of the trolls?  I assume the trolls lived there before the humans, since they're made out of rock and all.  So did the humans invade, and do a "this is all our land now" thing?  Or did they show up and were just "oh, hey, trolls.  Can we live over here by the water?" and the trolls were fine with it?  They seem to be on good terms, even if the king has to go get the big book of trolls, so I guess it's the second one, but the trolls seem a bit overly-deferential.

2) Who runs the kingdom during the interregnum?  Why isn't that person in charge again when Anna runs after Elsa?  Who put that council of people from other countries together?

3) I've always assumed that since this scene:
Where Elsa creates Olaf.
is followed by this scene:
Where Elsa lets the wind blow her cape away.
that just off camera, Olaf is doing his "I'm Olaf, and I like warm hugs!" bit, following along with Elsa, commenting on the song going on, and then when the cape flies away, says something like, "Oh!  You dropped your cape!  I'll go get it!" and that's why Anna and Kristoff find him way down the mountain.  He's there looking for the cape.

4) Why are those wolves such jerks?  They can't be suddenly hungry, it's been summer all summer, and the snow just fell like the day before.

5) Does Kristoff not know that that was Elsa and Anna when they first saw the trolls?  That's how he met the trolls.  They clearly announce that he's the king.  He totally looks like a king.  He says he saw them "fix it" before.  I think the only conclusion here is that Kristoff is painfully stupid.

6) I just realized that the second gif up there has the wrong lyrics.  I guess that's what I get for just searching giphy to find things.

7) Fixer-upper is a bad song.  They should have done a thing where they're going to start singing, only to have Old Grandpa Troll roll in and shut it all down.  "Don't you recognize Anna from the beginning of the movie?  We don't have time for a dumb song!"

8) I can't imagine that Hans would actually have been able to take over the kingdom.  Some jerk rolls in, both members of the royal family die, and that jerk runs things?  Fuck that shit.

9) I also would say that Elsa, being Queen, totally has the authority to fuck up everyone with ice powers when they invade her ice castle.  Who the fuck visits a country, declares their Queen a monster, and tries to kill her?  Jerks.  Jerks who deserve to get fucked up by ice powers.

10) Elsa probably should have gone to talk with the trolls too, even though OGT's advice at the beginning of the movie was basically garbage.  "Hey, you need to have really bad anxiety and isolate yourself from everyone."  You are bad at not-magic shit, OGT.

11) Hans is actually pretty lucky that Anna froze fully at that moment, because if he'd told Elsa that she was dead, and she wasn't, and then he killed her right in front of her, I'm pretty sure she would killed him in the most painful way should could have.

12) Those boats are fucked.

13) I kind of want to work out the thermodynamics of Olaf's flurry.  Not today, but at some point.

14) Arendelle is kind of a super power a the end.  I suspect that won't be covered in the sequel.

15) This TV cut moved the end credits scene with Marshmallow to before the credits.  Huh.

I also got cheesy tots for late lunch:
The burgers at Teddy's continue to be not the best.  Still, I wanted cheesy tots, and I know of only one place that makes cheesy tots.

And I got a free little bit of milkshake, because they made too much of three of them, and just randomly gave them out to people in the restaurant.

Sunday: "If you put a taco in a bag with even the smallest hole, the taco will escape!"

To be fair, they weren't actually talking about tacos, but about tako.

Spicy tan tan.

The kitchen miscounted my gyoza.

So they sent out two extra ones from a second batch.  I just finished eating the chicken, as saving that for dinner is my usual strategy.  Plus, even one extra gyoza made me super full.

  • Tanuki.
  • Dogs.
  • A strange link to my own blog, with the search term "cryptic bullshit" pre-filled in.  Why would this be here?
  • That XKCD about cell phones and the supernatural.  This also seems an odd link to have randomly show up out-of-the-blue.
  • Oh yeah, they showed a new X-files tonight.  I suspected something was up when my twitter timeline was all "who cares about this stupid football, show X-files!" and suddenly turned to "cats and video games" after it played on the mainland.  The reviews keep suggesting that the next two episodes are better, but I think I'm going to stick with Supergirl tomorrow.  Here are more reasons why:
    • "I also have alien DNA!"  I thought we knew that already.
    • "Everything from the original series was all a lie!"  That's a convenient way to un-corner-paint the story after the train wreck that was the last N seasons.
    • "Ker-splodey!"  Yes.  We have computer graphics now.
    • "So, there's this vast conspiracy that are poisoning and manipulating the population with lies about aliens and terrorists so they can lure us all into a state where we give up all our rights to them, and then they can use this to rule the country, if not the whole world!"  Why?  This is literally the dumbest plan ever.  You have "zero point energy" machines.  What do you get by having a planet of slaves?  Do you need them to crank a machine all day?  No.  You have what you've defined as infinite energy.  Do you need them to make food?  No, because again, infinite fucking energy.  Every problem that you can come up with is now forever solved because you have infinite energy.  Need more water?  Make some.  Need more gold?  Make some.  It only takes a finite amount of energy to do that, and we've established that you have infinite.
    • "Vast conspiracy!"  No.  There is not going to be a vast conspiracy because people are bad at conspiring.  You can't just murder your way to everyone staying quiet, because you'd need to murder a significant fraction of your organization at some stage, and that makes the whole thing hard to sustain.  Call this the Hydra Principle.
    • "I am not actually an ex-FBI agent, I'm more like this excited puppy in the way I can dump decades of previous crazy ideas for brand new crazy ideas!"  Or this puppy.  Or this one.  I found lots of good dog gifs.

Thursday: Thanksgiving

I only ended up eating like half of this.
Crap, I still have dessert to eat.

Anyway, thanksgiving food.  Rating things from best to worst

  1. Mashed potatoes.  Steaming is always better, as it's faster and doesn't soak them so much.
  2. Taro rolls.  I toasted them in the oven a bit too much, and discovered that slightly burned taro rolls taste delicious.
  3. Turkey.  It's not very brown, but the strategy I used of just dumping the turkey parts in the cast iron casserole, slapping the lid on it, and roasting it that way seemed to work rather well.  I salted, peppered, and en-sage-enated the turkey as well, to get a bit more flavor in it.  Some of the edge bits are a bit dry, so that's a vote for brining.  Still, impossibly easy to deal with, and lazy is always good.
  4. Gravy.  A bit salty, and given the option, don't buy whole wheat flour when you're expecting white.  How was this the only small package of flour?  The other options were five pound and eight pound bags.
  5. GBC.  It's GBC.
  6. Stuffing.  This ended up bad.  The flavor is just not good.  I think that I need to just toss all my spices and buy new ones.
Links.

  • Bunnies.  Watch the bunny paws.
  • I discovered this last night.  That is exactly the model that I have, that I used for the turkey.  I guess I should contact them, and see what the plan is.  If they're going to replace mine with a new one of equivalent size, then that's fine.  Otherwise, I may just keep and use this one.  I've had it for like six years now, and have never had any problems like that.
  • I'm 99% certain Mr. Mime just stole that plate of spaghetti from Wooper.
  • Squirrels.
  • Thanksgiving.
  • I noticed the same thing while watching the parade.  Way to hide the fact that you're bringing back Sharkleberry Fin, Kool-aid.  It's not Purplesaurus Rex, but still.
Oh, yeah.  I watched the parade.  Here's a cut so you don't have to load like 20MB of images if you don't really want to.  But really, what else are you doing right now?  Go on.  Click it.

Tuesday: So that's an hour gone, and now you're going to have to live with the consequences.

In my RSS feeds, I have a tumblr that posts pictures of games with bears.  This showed up today.  All I could think was, "holy shit, I fucking loved that game when I was like six."  Also, I just decided it's totally ok to swear in this review of a kids game, because kids today would never play it, so it doesn't fucking matter.

I then spent a long time trying different combinations of the words [bear, basket, catch, coins], until finally scanning the list of Apple2 games on gamefaqs.  Then one title jumped out at me, and I immediately knew it was the right game.

Stickybear Basket Bounce.
After finding the name of the game, it turns out it's kind of trivially easy to find copies that can be played on a modern computer via emulation.  The emulation was kind of broken, as a single tap on the arrow keys make Mr. Stickybear dash across the screen.  I thought you had to hold the key to move in the original, which would make it significantly easier.

Here's Stickybear in level 1.  Balls fall from the machine in the ceiling, and you have to catch them in the basket.

But if the ball hits Stickybear first, he gets knocked on his ass.  Hit detection is a bit odd, as you can catch with the bottom of the basket.

Level 2.  Same principle, but this time you have to catch coins.  Or rings.  Plates?  Whatever, matchine drops them again, etc.

Level 3: Stickybear in space.  The rocket-mushroom in the center shoots out stars that you need to catch.  This level also has a tiny worm creature that you have to jump over.  I didn't get a picture of that.

In all levels, once you lose all your baskets, this guy in the bulldozer shows up and pushes you off the screen.

That's pretty much it.  The levels loop after that, and I think they get faster and standard 1983 video game tricks.

Tuesday: Holy fuck

I'm delaying the story of absolute fuckery until tomorrow.  This allows me to compose the story with 80% fewer incantations of "fuck," and will allow me to determine what course of action the fuckers' bosses decide to take.

In other news, I saw this post today on the vintage ads page, which contained this image:

which led me to say out loud, "holy fuck, I actually have that!"

Seriously.  Didn't even need to get off the couch to pull it from the shelf.  So not only do I have it, I have its location in my library-partment memorized.
Huh.  Holy fuck for the whole day, then.

Here's a pile of things to click on and read.

Saturday: Sheets are fucking expensive

My new bed was delivered today, so I had to go out to buy sheets and things (since the new one is bigger than the old one).  Mattress pad + a new pillow + one set of sheets = 16% the price of the bed itself?  Is this like a razor/blade strategy?  I also had problems finding decent sheets that are completely cotton.  It's the tropics, polyester is a terrible thing here.  I think tomorrow will involve driving around to see if I can find better prices.

Yes, I know, online.  It's something for me to do tomorrow.

Then I had sushi:
Spicy ebi fry.  This is impossible to eat because it's too tall, but really tasty.

I was at seat #1, so I could steal all the delicious things immediately after they were placed on the belt.
"Dear Captain Planet, I think you know what you should have used instead of 'Heart'.  Ma-Ti was fucking useless."

  • My WF didn't have these when I looked today.  I really wish smokey bacon chips were available here.
  • I've been getting the feeling that Bob Woodward has become cranky old douchebag, and it seems other people are getting that idea too.
  • I had never heard of this story before.  I guess she's grown up now, and is making documentaries.
  • "[...] arrested on suspicion of resisting an officer and obstructing an officer in the performance of his duties [...]" Really?  Maybe next time they make up something to arrest someone for, they'll make sure he isn't a widely known ex-rapper.
  • So yes, if we had a proper single payer insurance system, none of this would happen.  Monopsony would prevent every hospital from having random prices that don't relate to anything, and would help keep administrator salaries reasonable.  CSB: I went to the doctor last week and got two drugs.  The pharmacist rang it up wrong, so the sticker didn't have the correct co-pay price.  When I looked, the list prices came out to about $700, for which I paid $30 in co-pays.  How can anyone claim that this system is at all good?

Sunday: I enjoyed my Sunday. You may want to skip this post.

Part 1: Lunch.

The standard "no clue what I want for lunch" happened again today, and I decided that I'd go with "fish" as the solution to the problem.  So, Nico's then.
Fish/chips/I was hungry and wanted calimari, too.
Not the best I've had at Nico's, with overcooked calimari and fish that largely shed the crispy coating.  Probably healthier in the long run, if you can get over the "totally fried" aspect.
And then there was a rainbow.

Part 2: This Crappy Pokemon Movie.

I've done this before. Often.  Many times, apparently.  This was not the best one I've seen.
"Douchebag vs. Douchebag: Why Even Have the Main Characters" would have been a better title.

It stars this jerk.  He speaks. Using Inuyasha's voice, which is just creepy.

He's friends with these three jerks.  They talk too, but largely tell him he "needs to train more" and "isn't ready yet." Why does that sound like Dragonball Z?

He ignores advice, and goes to fight this jerk. His ass is thoroughly handed to him, and he gets his jerk friends frozen in ice.  Good job, jerk.
Insert opening credits with extended opening theme music from current series here.

James is only in the movie here. Making a call.

To Jessie, who equally shows up for like two seconds.  Fuck.
Blah blah blah, Loser McJerkface teams up with Team Twerp (Unova Version), and run from Jerky McKicksYourAss.  That's when the felonies start happening.
Like breaking into the subway system by smashing in giant train doors.  Do subways have giant train doors?

Then they steal a blimp.  A blimp stored at the transportation museum at the edge of town that the subway connects to for some reason.

Then they steal a train.  These thefts are attempts to confuse Jerky McKYA.
Fighty crap happens, but not regular Pokemon fighting.  Random "now I must power-up to fight with my TRUE STRENGTH!" kind of fighting.
See?  Upgraded form.
More fighting.  They free the jerk's friends, who stand around and don't help.
"Because, honestly? We kind of hate him too."
Then the jerk realizes that the true way to win is not to play, or some other stupid lesson.  The villain largely says, "there you go, that's what you need to learn" and everything ends happy.

Definitely needed more Team Rocket.

Part 3: Things Left Undone.

I left myself a note yesterday that I needed lightbulbs.  Then I totally forgot about them, so my kitchen is still dark.

This meant that it was too dark to make dinner, so I just had a sandwich.  That's unfortunate, because I was going to make either a stromboli or a calzone, and now I'll have to do that tomorrow after work.  Instead of immediately eating pre-made stromboli or calzone.

This, but this is undone for a scientific reason:

Part 4: I Watch Most of Another Movie.

Three years ago, I watched this movie.  They had the second(?) sequel on today, so I watched that as well.  Not quite as economically devastating.  Well, ok.  It's not economically devastating if you ignore the part where Tinkerbell nearly destroys the entire world in a blanket of ice.  That would probably mess up the society they'd built.

But hey, the ending is a deus ex machina.  So it has that going for it.

Part 5: Links.

  • Is this story suggesting that because fines "could lower profits" at banks, we should just ignore all the shady dealings?  Isn't that basically condoning extortion?
  • I'm also a bit sad that the monkey couldn't go home with his people, but then again, they left him in a car while they went to Ikea.  Nice coat, though.
  • Puppy.
  • Prime rib.

Saturday: Yes, I already did two posts today, but I didn't do the boring one

I was going to wait until after making dinner, but I think I'm just going to have a sandwich instead of sticking to my plan.  I'll move it to tomorrow instead, to add to the suspense.  I did do kurukuru again for lunch, where I had to order everything.  When I arrived, the only things on the belt were kimchi and wasabi.  Ick.  I also stumbled across a "what's the right option" situation.  I ordered a plate of ebi fry.  Moments after the waitress left, an army of ebi fries came down the belt.  I didn't take one, as that kind of seemed like it'd be rude. "Oh, sorry, you're too slow, Sushi Waitress. I got it from the uncaring robot instead."  I know she just pulled one from the belt (I recognized it), but it didn't seem to be the right thing for me to do that.

"I'm Dr. Bearzo, the Rock-and-Roll Bear, and I do cocaine!"
Squareness.
Oh, I found another story:

I was watching pawn stars on tv, because I'm lazy, and wanted something I could have in the background while reading the internets.  I don't think I have anything on the DVR that I can use as background noise at this point, so it had to be something live.  In any case, the pawn star guys bought some Confederate money at something like twice the face value.  Since I was looking at Scooby-Doo stuff earlier for this post, that reminded me of this episode where Scooby inherits a million dollars, but: Oh no! Surprise! It's Confederate money, so it's "worthless."  This didn't really seem plausible when I was little, and if those bastards on History channel are throwing money at it, it must be wrong.  So, let's look, and it looks like Scooby inherits $500 bills, which are in pretty good condition due to being an image copied into the animation.  Let's look at ebay, the center of trading good money for shit you don't need.  There's some crazies selling at like $1100US for one, but I can find them going for $300.  That means that Scooby could get 60% of face value without much trouble in today's market.  Blah blah inflation?  Still works out to about $100,000 in 1968 dollars.  That's about 11 years of the median 1968 wage.  Not a bad value.

Tuesday: wait, it's still only Tuesday?

It really felt like a Wednesday today.  More boringness today.
Scooby would be a bit shorter this way.

Monday: President's Day!

Which of course means that I get to sleep in and relax all day instead of doing regular Monday-grade work.  I did plan on working on the spectrum code a bit more today, but never really got around to it.  I'm doing this post now so I won't feel quite so lazy taking a nap.  Then I'll work on it (for realsies).

I woke up feeling like I wanted a burger.  Unfortunately, this led to the worst experience at Burgers on the Edge I've ever had.  First, they were out of regular fries, so I had to get the truffled waffle fries.  Then, after sitting down, one of the girls from the counter came out to tell me that I couldn't get the Parisian, as they were out of foie gras. Damn.  That meant I had to find out what else to get there, since I've never gotten anything else.  I built my own burger, only to find that it had to have turkey bacon, because they were out of regular proper piggy bacon.  Basically, the entire lunch was a disaster.
Also these people were there.  I wouldn't normally post a picture of some random tourist family, but this was one of the worst families I've ever seen.  I was annoyed at them because the mom had to basically approve everyone's meal while ordering, and had to ask the workers questions about every thing she ordered.  Ok, fine, that's not worthy of public shaming.  First note how they're eating outside.  Obviously, that means that the birds are around, hoping for food to fall.  Second, let's be kind and state that these weren't the most careful of eaters, so they had lots of crumbs left around after eating.  Still, not a big deal.  What is a big deal is the fact that the one daughter thought that a game of "try and kick the bird" was a suitable thing to do after throwing out trash.  This wasn't just walking through a pile of birds and watch them scatter.  She was smiling as she intentionally aimed kicks at the closest bird, making odd steps to get closer to them.  The mom wasn't any better, as they were sitting there after finishing, and a bird kept landing on the edge of the table.  She flailed at it with the same anger, as if the bird was trying to steal her keys or something.  Maybe you shouldn't eat like Cookie Monster, slobs.

Anyway, food.  Here's the burger I ended up getting:
Wheat bun, BBQ sauce, sauteed mushrooms, Kobe beef, cheddar cheese, the aforementioned bacon, stewed apples, crispy onion straws, top bun.  Plus the truffled waffle fries.  The BBQ sauce was a bit overpowering, but this was a very tasty burger.  This place really does make the best burgers in town, and even when everything goes wrong, they still make something more delicious than any other place I've been to.  So, disaster, but a wonderfully delicious disaster that still beats every other burger on the island.

Also, don't truffle waffle fries.  One fry grabs all the stuff, and the others feel sad and lonely.

The real goal of the day was to go pick up malasadas, since tomorrow is Fat Tuesday (right?  if not, come back and re-read this section when it is).  I went to the place famous for them, which is conveniently right across the street from the burger place:
They were super busy, and I think going today instead of the more traditional day (tomorrow) was a better idea.  Now I don't have to fight the crowds that I'm sure will be there all day.
I picked up eight, which is probably way more than I need.  Two regular sugar, two cinnamon sugar, two haupia (coconut), two dobash (chocolate).  I had to taste one, even though I was still full from lunch:
OM NOM NOM!
These are very similar to paczkis I used to get in EL, as they're the same concept (fatty lard cakes deep fried to use up sweet and fatty ingredients before Lent makes people not eat fun anymore).  Biting into it when it's still warm makes you think about biting into a fluffy cloud.  They're a bit eggier than I remember, but that's not a bad thing.  Even though I got a bunch of these, I figure it's not so bad since I don't ever buy these regularly.

Since it's President's Day, I figured I'd put up some related videos.  First was one that showed up in my youtube subscriptions from the Onion.  I'd vote for this president any day of the week:
Next, a somewhat inaccurate rap about George Washington:

Finally, today's links since I've already finished reading all my RSS feeds.
  • This is a great idea, and if I wasn't so full, I'd be craving pizza.
  • Baby bunnies!
  • Last week, Julie posted this link about glue, which made me remember something that I was going to comment on.  Then today, I saw this vintage ad about dairy, and it reminded me.  Here's the wikipedia article that discusses the main point:  Elsie the Cow was Borden's mascot, and her husband, Elmer, was  used by Borden's chemical division as the mascot for Elmer's glue.  So, that means that while Elsie was making milk for everybody to enjoy, her husband had been shipped off and rendered down into the glue the kids used in school.  I think I have a tag for this kind of point....

Tuesday: working late means getting crappy food for dinner

At least I know that Japan will be there to make me feel better about what I got:
Hrm. Ok then, I guess.

Tinkerbell and the Industrial Revolution

Tonight, while flipping through the channels, I got up to get a drink, and returned to find the Tinkerbell movie on the screen. I kept watching, mostly because I somehow assumed I was watching it before I left. Sometimes I'm dumb I guess.

The story is apparently how Tinkerbell singlehandedly pulls the Fairy Kingdom out of the drudgery of manual labor by industrializing the fairy-proletariat.  She does this using a wide selection of "Lost Things," crap from the real world that's washed up in Neverland. She also has help from her fairy friends: Pinky from Pinky and the Brain Fairy (NARF!), Pinky's Fat Friend Fairy, Bitchy Fairy, Mildly Retarded Fairy, and Southern Fairy. There are more, but they're basically Exposition and Background Fairies.

It's actually not too bad, which given the production stories, suggests that John Lasseter actually does have some  magic power that allows him to fix any animation disaster.  However, there do seem to be some serious economic repercussions to Tinkerbell's...um...tinkering.

  • Tinkerbell's industrial revolution is built upon the use of the Lost Things. Unless they invent fairy mines and fairy forges soon, they're going to run out of these mechanical components.  This kind of puts Fairy-topia in a kind of cargo-cult position: they have incredible things, but clearly don't have the technical foundation necessary to develop these things by themselves.
  • Tinkerbell just shrank the time necessary to get ready for spring from a year to a single night. That's a 36400% increase in productivity. Given that I don't recall seeing more than a few dozen fairies at any one time, I think this means that Tink's just put everyone in Fairyland out of work. Why have a bunch of different fairies doing things slowly when one fairy could do all the spring preparations with industry? Based on this totally 100% accurate wikipedia page that kind of productivity increase is roughly the equivalent of taking the 1st century Roman empire, and overnight turning it into the United States, circa 1998. That's definitely not going to create serious social unrest, and the possible reconsideration of whether a strict caste-based absolute monarchy is really the best system.
