Thursday: Why does this run so slow now?

It looks like when I ran the script three years ago, it ran in under a day.  Now it's already on day three.  WTF?

I'm pretty sure they increased the spawn rate of rare creatures.

Sunday: Apparently I had a plan for today, I just completely forgot it.

Whoops.  Well, alternate plan that I came up with this morning instead, then:
  1. Get gas.  Flip off boarded up gas station you had planned to go to, drive around the block to line up to go to alternate gas station.
  2. Drive really far away to get some ok pizza.

Garlic, spinach, pepperoni.  From Bob's.  It's not bad, and they have good crusts that are crispy on the bottom, but then squishy inside.  It's like Boston's was, back when Boston's wasn't run by idiots.  Technically there's a Boston's in Kailua, but they only have street parking, and I hate that.
  1. Go bowling, because I haven't been in a while, and I thought it would be a good thing to do.  I did not do particularly well.
    1. 6,2=8;5,4=17;6,2=25;5,1=31;3,0=34;7,2=43;9,0=52;8,0=60;x=78;8,0=88
    2. 5,0=5;7,/=15;0,7=22;2,0=24;6,1=31;x=50;5,4=59,5,4=68;3,5=76;7,/,3=89
There are also no good stickers for this.

  1.  Go to Target, and then realize I only need like two things, so it becomes the fastest trip to Target ever.  Also that there's no Pokestop there anymore.
  2. Use modern technology to play video games over the internet and chat.

I was a fancy bird.

Saturday: Let's go to Kailua!

It was a rainy day in the mountains.  But only in the mountains.  It was dry on this side, and it was dry on that side.
Then I got chicken tikka masala.  It's a bit too sweet, I've decided.  There's not enough of a spice as well.  They were also out of naan, so I had to get roti, which isn't quite the same.

Then bowling.  This score is a lie.  The pin doodle stole one point on frame 5, and one on frame 7.
I didn't do that great today.  I'm going to blame the fact that it was busy today.

Saturday: Saturday B

Apparently I lost track of time, and didn't do all the things I was going to do.  Fuck.

Anyway, Kailua/Indian/Bowling was the theme of the day.

This is where the hand drawn sketch of the chicken I saw would be.

These assholes sat at their table for like twenty minutes after they'd finished eating.  Note the chairs they'd stolen from the second table inside.  Also note Captain Stylish's choice of crocs as actual shoes.

These people were sitting inside.  Note the dog.  Who brings a dog and sits inside?

Chicken Tikka Masala. And this is when I realize I'm super hungry again.
After eating, I went to the used book store next door.
I thought about getting this book of Hokusai prints, but it's in the "Crazy Expensive Book" section.  $60 for a book without the dust jacket?  Amazon suggests I can get a complete version for around $40.

Then I saw a duck.

And then went bowling.
This is where I'd have html scores, but fuck html.
Game 1.

Game 2.
I could have played another game, but they only take cash, and I wasn't sure how much each game was.  $3.50, so the ten in my wallet plus the random change in the bowling bag would have covered a third game.

This is where I should have said something about getting the lamb sorted, but I'm apparently putting that off until tomorrow.

Saturday: Adventures in Kailua

First important point: Kailua is basically a roughly equal mix of a) people who live in Kailua because that's where their family has lived for generations; b) tourists visiting someplace "out of the way"; c) some sort of hyper-douchebag pseudo-hippies.

I'll admit, group (c) probably seemed extra prominent because I went to the WF that they recently built there.  "Where's your gluten free section?" "No, like, dude.  Dude.  You have to put that [six pack of beer, single heirloom tomato] in a bag.  I'll be careful with it.  Just put it in a bag."  "O. M. G! Look at all these apples!"  Fuck you, that's a shitty selection of apples, they just made a big pile of them.  My WF is probably half the size, but the produce section seems to have more stuff.  Not just big piles of the same stuff.

Part 1: Lunch

After deciding to head over to Kailua, I googled around to see if I could find some place to have lunch nearby.  "India Cafe"?  Sure, that sounds good.

It's really tiny inside.  I'm in the corner here.
I probably actually like Indian food more than I really think I do.  Or, in any case, the Indian food that's available in restaurants here.
Garlic naan, chicken tikka masala with potato masala, watermelon juice.
I would have liked more garlic in my garlic naan.  The tikka was a bit tame.  Knowing that, I'd probably ask if it could be spiced up more next time.  The potatos were delicious.  I may need to back-engineer that recipe.  "Potatoes slow cooked with cloves and cinnamon in a tasty masala" is all the menu says.  I'm pretty sure the salad is just there to make you feel better about having three starches in one meal.

Part 2: Ramekins

I never have enough ramekins, so I made the trip to Kailua specifically to go buy more at pier one.  $2.50 each.  Problem solved.

They also decided that they'd have those french onion soup bowls that I've been looking for for years, but I didn't get any.  They weren't on the shopping list, so I skipped them.

Part 3: Bowling

This was the other goal of the trip.
Shoes!

Hrm.  Yeah, that didn't really work as well as I'd hoped.  There should be boxes dividing things, and I don't see them.  Anyway.  Decent first game, increasingly bad second one.

Part 4: WF

I already covered my first impressions.  They have a larger meat case, but think they had higher prices.  Ground lamb though, so things kind of balance out.  The deli is hidden in the far back corner, which is even harder to find due to the fact that the back of the store has a series of shelves perpendicular to the rest, obscuring the deli unless you approach from the perfect direction.

Part 5: The Moon

It was out and shiny last night.

Part 6: Links

Kind of sucked this week, unfortunately.  Game two taught me an important lesson though: Katy Perry music makes you bowl like crap.

  • It's funny because he was a carpenter.
  • The important points to know about this are a) the Tuareg rebels were supported by the Qaddafi regime in Libya, and are widely believed to have made up part of his mercenaries; b) with the fall of Qaddafi, they've been able to grab large quantities of weapons and use them against poorly trained and armed fighters in the Malian army; c) within days of the junta taking control of Mali, the Tuareg rebels gained ground, despite the junta claiming that they would ensure the rebels were defeated.  The good thing is that they've realized they've only made things worse, and are working to move Mali back to democratic control, given that Mali was widely celebrated as making decent progress after years of dictatorship.
  • This is a depressingly important story about the consequences of welfare reform in the 90s.  In case you don't want to read it, look at this chart from the article, and think about what the lack of corresponding increase in the number of people receiving welfare subsequent to the start of the recession actually means.

Clearly, I should have stopped after the third game.  I kind of sucked the rest of the time, mostly because I had trouble getting the ball to go at the angle I wanted.  I'm thinking that means that that muscle needs more work, suggesting I should probably bowl more.
Plus I got to wear my snazzy shoes again.
I also got sushi over there at another Ninja Sushi.  This one was not as good as the airport one, but still had fairly decent food.  Because of the late lunch, I still haven't made dinner, but I think that's going to change soon.  I thought I had more links today, but I guess I don't.  Bunny sandwich, then:
  • Bunnies in bumper cars!
  • I don't understand the current push to basically say, "look, that guy makes more than you and doesn't do any real work.  Why don't you get angry at him and take that money away?"  Especially since "that guy" always seems to not be making an excessive amount of money, but works in a union job, or for the government, or as a teacher.  Isn't suggesting that everyone should be equally poor, while the super rich continue to be super rich a very cynical viewpoint? Why aren't people seeing this fact?  Besides, if state governments hadn't gutted college level funding, tuition wouldn't have increased.  So, let's go through this slowly: First, stop funding colleges due to "budget cuts." Second, watch tuition rise and begin to price college out of people's means.  Third, blame the people (this is today's actual link) who work at the college for not working hard enough, and if they only made less (or did more), tuition wouldn't rise.  Is the fourth step to then not pay people as much, and when that doesn't help, dismantle the entire thing?  Seriously, if I could light people on fire with my mind...
  • Bunny ears!

no bowling

After waiting for a lane to open up for 45 minutes, I decided that if I wanted to sit alone and read my RSS feeds, it's far more comfortable to do it at home using my laptop.  Once again they had a stupid televised tournament going on, which ate up a third of the lanes.  It also didn't help that there were a bunch of people who had spent the money to buy their own balls/shoes/professional bowling bag, but preferred to spend their time talking instead of bowling.  I watched the computer give up on one group twice and reset the lane, after it'd decided that they weren't bowling anymore.

I guess this means that I'll need to find something new to do on sundays in the future.

I just gave up after that terrible third game.  It was super busy, plus the tournament people were back.  I got stuck next to the tournament warm up lane, and they'd asked me to avoid getting in their way.  I think having to watch out for other people was part of the reason that this week was so bad.

At least I broke my "game two is always the worst" streak.

I slept weird, and somehow pulled the entire right side of my chest.  It turns out that when you're right handed, those are the same muscles you use to do pretty much everything involved in bowling.  Because of that, I stopped after three games, in the hope that sitting quietly at home with some aleve will fix everything.  The star in game two denotes a score that the machine miscounted.  I definitely hit two pins, but it only counted one.  Since I don't post the original score photos, it probably isn't a big deal, but it's still annoying.

Because picking up anything heavier than my phone is currently causing me to make involuntary unhappy sounds, I think my roast chicken plan will have to wait another day.  I'll stick together something later when I get hungry.

First month statistics: = 124.6 +/- 14.22. min/max = 102/149
By week:
  1. 127.75 +/- 9.21, 121/141
  2. 120.33 +/- 20.84, 102/143
  3. 124.50 +/- 16.78, 111/149
  4. 124.75 +/- 16.00, 107/145
By game:
  1. 130.25 +/- 16.52, 111/145
  2. 118.5 +/- 2.08, 116 / 121
  3. 121.25 +/- 21.42, 102/149
  4. 129.67 +/- 10.60, 120/141
P-value of unimodal distribution: 0.093. Proposed bimodal groupings: 73.5%: 117.4+/-7.7, 26.4%: 144.5+/-2.9.

So, from this, we can conclude that I pretty much always suck up game two of the sets, and that I always seem to get one good game in 140s each week, and then the other three games that week will be in the high 110s.  The good game doesn't seem to always fall in game one, so it can't just be that I'm refreshed when I arrive, and then tire out.  We'll see if this continues in the second month of bowling.

Sunday: Including bowling

A while ago, groupon sent an offer for La Tour Cafe. Unfortunately, like all the other groupon offers, it was largely useless (like $10 for a $20 coupon, only good on one visit, only good certain days I think), but the menu did look interesting.  Since I'm still somewhat sick with this stupid cold, I figured it would be good to go and have some soup.  I also got the turkey and sundried tomato panini (with provolone and surprise spinach). I tried to substitute the salad for the soup, but that's apparently not allowed. Odd.

The sandwich was good, as was the soup, and reminded me of a Panera, if the food was made by people who actually cared about making the food taste good.  The tomatoes were nicely ripe and flavorful on the salad as well.  My only complaint would be that the onions didn't taste like they'd been carmelized completely before being added to the soup.  More like they were softened, and then added to a soup base and allowed to soak up the flavor of that.

All the reviews talked about their macaroons, so I figured I'd get one to try it.  This was the strawberry/black currant. Strawberry cakes with strawberry creme between, with a hidden spot of black currant jam inside.  It was good, and made a nice end to the meal.

My major complaint is that this place is located inside a giant ex-warehouse, and the only parking is around the perimeter.  It's one of those places where you just have to creep around and stalk someone to get a spot.

I then ran some errands, and eventually made my way over to bowling:

Where I got to try out my new shoes!  It is significantly better to bowl in your own shoes than to rent them and be creeped out by that fact.  Unfortunately, my continued illness seemed to distract me, so I didn't do as well this week.
