Sunday: I'll split this when I'm not working with being awake most of the past three days

 An empty apartment.
 Airport sushi.
Airport miso and sake (ama no to).
I hope some of this style survives after the renovation.
A pretzel in Chicago.  I had two.
But Chicago doesn't plug in their chairs, so whatever the point?
I guess that since the Tumblr app works so well, that have time to add fancy graphics that don't work.

  • But this part worked fine.  And I'm so sleep deprived that I keep walking up from dreams happening in the real world, which isn't the best.

Friday: My last night here.

I'm waiting on my dryer to finish, so I can finish packing.  I should have started it earlier.  I should have had dinner earlier, too.  Today's been a lot of procrastinating.  I didn't even check in for my flight until two hours after I could have.  Things will be better tomorrow at this time.  I hope.

I dropped my car off to be shipped today.  It was actually reasonably quick and easy once I got there.  Traffic was a disaster, though, so it took nearly 45 minutes to do that.
And tomorrow the junk people come and take everything, and then I lock up the place and head to the airport.  I'm almost certainly going to be there way early.

Sunday: Hiking is tricky.

The plan for today was to climb Diamond Head.  This is not as simple as it should be.  There really isn't sufficient parking there, so they just stop admitting people to the park.  We tried to get in, but were turned around.  We decided to try and kill some time by driving around the outside.
Where we stopped to take some pictures at a nice overlook, and where some jackass got upset because we were standing in a location that blocked his view of "the surfers," all of which were little more than tiny dots on the ocean below.  Get a better hobby than "spying on people from my car like some kind of freak" jackass.
Anyway, the second attempt was no more successful, so the real advice isn't "get there early so you can hike before the sun rises too much and makes it hot" it's "get there early because otherwise you won't be able to hike at all."  I don't remember this much trouble the last time I tried to hike it, but maybe that was a weekday.

Alternate plan: Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail.  It was also crazy busy with no place to park.  Except for the one open space that suddenly appeared after we skipped around a Nissan that was stalking some imaginary space.  It seemed like this would work out, even though the breeze is a bit inconsistent on the trail.
But there is a nice view that I should make a mosaic of.
However, there are no restrooms anywhere, so when that became an issue, we decided to cut the hike short (apparently it's only 1.5 miles roundtrip, but since it's mostly all uphill, it seems worse).  The next stop: Costco.

Which really is a good place to stop while on vacation.  They sell local stuff at Costco prices, and although the checkout is always busy, they have pretty decent pizza you can have for lunch.  Solves many problems at once.

Then more beach time in the afternoon, most of which I didn't take pictures of, not even when Ramona met three Japanese grandmothers in the ocean, and began to talk and splash with them, despite not knowing a mutual language.

The sun was a bit excessive today, as there were no mitigating clouds.  One result of this was a desire to be lazy and not drive very far for dinner.  Since there's an Eggs and Things on the next block over from the hotel, this wasn't too hard to do.

Kalbi and eggs.  I still don't really like eggs.  The kalbi was good, though.

And a nice sunset.
Followed by a bit more Pokemon.
I found a Pineco.

And hatched a Larvitar.

Stuck my on-brand Cloyster into the gym we defeated.

And then fought a Xatu that wouldn't give up and stay in the ball.
Unfortunately this is their last night here, and after the hectic days before, it was good to have one that was somewhat more focused on relaxing.  Let's see how much we can stick into the last few hours tomorrow.

Since we had planned on hiking today, I froze four bottles of water overnight, and planned to use them as after-hike drinks, as well as keeping other things that shouldn't be frozen cold.  I took one of my canvas shopping bags, lined the bottom with a towel, put in all the stuff to keep cold, and then covered it with a second towel.  I assumed this would stay cool for the hike, but didn't think it'd last much longer than that.

When I got home tonight, three of the bottles still had significant chunks of ice in them.  That means that over the course of about 13 hours, there wasn't enough energy transfer from the outside to my trunk and then into the "cooler" I'd made.  A bottle of water contains 500 ml, so 500g, which requires 166500 J of energy to melt (ignoring temperature changes within a given state).  This works out to an energy transfer of about 3.5 W.  I was unable to find a useful table to compare this to before giving up on writing more of this post.

Saturday: I am still tired.

Today's main plan was to go see Iolani Palace.
We had an actual docent led tour, and it was far superior to the headphone self-guided tours.  There is more information and production in the headphone tour, but the guided story from the docent was a much better experience.  I don't know what the rules and times are for the two, as as we were finishing up, headphone tour people were already in the palace as well.

Then we got ramen for lunch, and I didn't take a picture, but Julie did.

The next goal for the day was to have an afternoon at the beach, to let Ramona have something fun to do after being quiet and listening at the palace.

This is a cake monster that is sand flavored cake.  It is very large, and can eat people whole.

I didn't know that people actually used metal detectors to find things on the beach.
I've seen four so far on beach visits.

Then dinner.  The original plan was Nico's again.

I was able to stick Fire Dog in the gym there.
But ultimately, we switched over to Uncle's to see what they have.

They have Parmesan crusted Mahimahi is what they have.
It's good.  I think they're slightly more upscale than Nico's, as they don't use styrofoam boxes at lunch, and do not have plastic chairs.  Julie disagrees, due to the presence of art and caricatures on the walls.

I powered up Rhydon specifically to take the top position in the gym.

And then after grinding forever, we opened up enough space at the Magic Island gym to stick in our people.

And I found Houndour, nearly a month after finding the evolved form.

Friday: Whales and OMG am I tired.

This whale watching was more successful, with five whales, one of which liked to jump and splash.

Aloha Tower.

Ledian.

Giovanni's.

HI-BBQ.

Makes delicious pulled pork, and super good everything else.

Dole whip.

Rainbow eucalyptus.

A gym.

Skarmory.

Furret.
Waikiki isn't really a good place to be.

Thursday: The daystar will kill me.

Pearl Harbor.

I earned a medal.
What was lunch?  Oh yeah.  Burgers.  It wasn't that bad, and was more filling than expected.
Then more beach.  You can see the rain coming.
I could not figure out how to fold the beach chair I borrowed from the hotel, and then transposed room numbers when returning it.  The sun is a space demon, who steals reason and sense with near blackbody radiation.
The sunset was rather nice after the bulk of the rain passed.

We then ordered way too much food for dinner in Hawaii Kai.
Tasty food, but far too much of it.
And I stole another sock when I did laundry yesterday.

Wednesday: Some people do not fully understand how vacations work.

Breakfast, up too early, but delicious breakfast.

Then out to brave the rain for a Pokewalk around the park.

Then back to the hotel for some beach time.  With all the clouds, I don't think I got enough sun to burn.
Then....I forgot what happened, but I think we decided to needed to fortify with some lunch if we were going to drive two hours to get shrimp on the North Shore.
So not-so-kaiten sushi.
But then it got too late to plausibly make it before the shrimp places closed.
So a trip to the Pali lookout.  Where it was still raining.
Then a visit to my apartment, and dinner at Nico's (which I didn't get a photo of because my phone died).
Then back to the hotel to have a nightcap and play the Fluxx game we got at the mall after sushi.

I won this game.
And the second one, indicating that regular Fluxx is the game I am best at.

No links, because I am again super tired, which means I'm just getting further behind the news.  Saw today that the new Attorney General perjured himself.  So that's great.

Tuesday: I forgot to take pictures at Korean BBQ.

But I vacuumed, and I got to the airport with plenty of time to pick up Team Julie, and we were able to get the cake, and get them checked in at the hotel, and see the beach, and wash Ramona off after the beach, and get slightly lost going to the KBBQ place, which isn't as good as Gogi Time, but it still AYCE, and still tasty and good, and everything worked out without any major issues.

Except forgetting to take food pictures.  In my defense, I was hungry as I hadn't eaten all day.

Also it's super rainy, and forecast to stay super rainy for awhile.  Fuckadoodle doo, not much you can do.

But the cake came out nice, and I thought it was tasty, although we're going to be eating cake forever.

And we were fine, but there was some sort of major accident when I was coming home, and they had only one of the five lanes of traffic open.  I didn't see any smashed up cars, and they were on the wrong side of the street for it to be a pedestrian car accident.
I got home to an email from Amazon telling me that UPS was saying they couldn't deliver my package today.
Maybe part of the problem is that you're spending like 13 hours making deliveries.
And I know if they were delivering at nearly 10pm that a security guard was downstairs at the front desk.

No links, because I haven't read the internet today, and I need to get up early tomorrow because some people do vacations hardcore.  I appreciate island time vacations, because I am lazy and like to sleep in.
