Friday: The end.

Which is good, because I've been feeling worse as the day went on.  I'm starting to cough and be snuffly, so I think "con-death" is very likely.  I'll be glad to be home tomorrow.
Where I'll hopefully not wake up at 5:30am.
I did get my rebase to finish and build, after a lot of help and a lot of C++ deciphering.  It probably works, so I can finish the rest of the packages Monday, and get this bit out for review.  And then get the next project going.  And get documentation out for both of those and a third one I mostly just want to have an opinion on.  And maybe do outreach/education science stuff.

Or just hide in bed until I feel better.

Wednesday: Day one proper of the conference.

With the poster session.  Our poster arrived just fine, and went over just fine.  I'll have to think about integrating things into astropy at some point, probably.

Also, why are conferences in warm places during the summer?  Ugh.

A pokemon, some flowers, and a bunch of slide images that probably are impossible to read.

Sunday: The riddle of queso

It's challenging, because it is easy to make, and yet you probably shouldn't eat a giant bowl of queso in one sitting.  Of course, now I'm hungry again, and keep thinking about it, sitting in my fridge, waiting for me to eat it.

And that's pretty much how my today went.  I woke up, I watched a bunch of youtube stuff, pushing my watch later list under 250, made queso, ate queso, watched Supergirl, played video games.  It was an excellent day, although I probably should have done laundry, and I probably should have put together the bookshelf I got yesterday.

My phone can't really capture the dynamic range needed for an eclipse, but there was an eclipse tonight.

Wednesday: This week is both too fast and too slow.

Trying to sort out travel for next month doesn't help.  Trying to get that travel sorted out so I can do my other travel for next month double doesn't help.  Plus boring doctor appointments, and dumb crap like that (although I did get my insurance people to let me transfer to a new regular doctor that's like 25 minutes closer).  Finally, tomorrow, on the coldest day of the week, the apartment is having people visit to paint my front door.  Which means my door has to be open for multiple hours.  Which means I need to be home.  Which means tomorrow I'm working from home.

My cold, cold, home.

The moon and Mars.
 New Pokemon are here.
Like my old laptop.

And FireMonkey.

Friday: Thanks, jerk in the pickup truck swearing in the street outside.

I didn't have a picture for today, and going out to see you shouting randomly before nearly crashing your truck (twice) made me try to take a picture of the moon.
It worked about the same as always.

I finally have my RSS saved items back below 1000.  I should really sort out the ~600 items that have been there for more than a year.

Tuesday: My plan for today was to eat hot dogs, take a walk, eat more hot dogs, and watch some fireworks.

I did all those things, and did more editing for SciPy stuff.  I do not like how Snek handles Unicode, because that handling appears to consistently be "be as difficult about everything as possible."

I also drew a very bad picture of how different parts of a probability distribution are included in a calculation.
And I battled more with my Magikarp, so I have more data to include in the plot from yesterday:
This is the "most useful" version.

This splits two data points into their true input JP and the 5% and 25% scaled values.  I had boosts on those two runs, so the scaled values are probably more correct.
I also need a better way to put code into blogs.  I've decided I'm going to copy my R code when I make things like this, so I can find them later.  It really is super easy:

j = data.frame(read.table("./jp",sep='\t',header=TRUE))
ggplot(j,aes(x=jp,y=height)) + geom_point() + stat_smooth(method='lm',formula=y ~ sqrt(x), col='red')
ggsave("/tmp/jp2.png")

And I took a walk:
The moon was out.
I saw four geckos and one dog that threw up.  I was happier for one of those.
This didn't quite capture all the pinks and purples.
And then I came home and had my code insulted.  If the input data wasn't so bad, the code would do a better job on it.  More webpages should be designed with a structured data concept.

Then there were fireworks:

Boom!

Ka-ka-boom!

Ba-fszzzzzzzz.

Boom boom boom siziziziziz.

Boom ka boom!

Boo boom!

Boom boom boom boom!

Boom ka boom boom!

Boom boom boom boom boom boom boom boom!

Fazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Wednesday: I specifically chose a career to avoid lifting heavy objects.

Unfortunately moving our processing cluster from one island to another means lots of heavy crap has to be lifted.  It turns out moving computers has a large cardio component, and I am bad at that.  Also breathing, which actually was the major issue.

And then back to work to write a terrible script to automate things so I could increase my sample size, and see if that's the problem with my fit.

Another unexpected problem of lifting things is that I got somewhat dehydrated, and that caused me to kind of lose my appetite until I had had enough water to sort things out.  Which sucks.  But that gave me a reason to go have a big dinner to sort it out.

My initial thought was to go to the build-a-pizza place in Aina Haina, and then get shave ice.  But traffic to Aina Haina is awful.  But thinking about that also made me think of La Tour Cafe, which is also there, but has a place in Iwilei.  So I thought about going there, which led me to thinking about Nico's.  I went to Uncle's, because Nico's had a line out the door.

What I really wanted was Cafe Jolie steak frites, but the traffic to get there would be even worse.

I probably should have not included the image with the Sun, as I think it messed up the colors of the clouds.

Part of the La Tour idea involved soup, so.

Garlic ahi.
"Do you want to think about dessert?"

Angry bunny haupia gelato.
"I wonder if I can throw somebody in the gym here."

Nope.
But Orion was out.
Ok, I'm not sure it's really visible here, partially due to jpg artifacts, but there are smudges for most of the stars.

  • I don't think I ever made a livejournal, but the Russians have apparently ruined it.
  • Comic book stuff.
    • I'm glad other people think Legends of Crazytown is good specifically because the writers are clearly covering their ears and shouting nonsense when anyone tries to tell them they've written something ridiculous.
    • I mean, all comic book stuff is ridiculous, so it's best just to go full on Crazytown and write the best story possible.
      • This comic led me to thinking far more than I should have about mutants and Inhumans.  "Well, Inhumans is Jack Kirby, and mutants was Stan Lee."  Except no, they're both credited.  So, life starts on Earth, the Celestials come and tinker with things to create a small number of Eternals, and in the process add genetic features that can cause some humans to mutate into mutants.  But then later, the Kree come and tinker with things to create a small number of humans who can turn into Inhumans if exposed to Terrigen mist.  That means that it seems like there should be someone who is born, develops mutant powers, and then can be transformed into an Inhuman later.
    • I'm worried about this, but I assume they'll use what makes the Squirrel Girl comic so good to make this show not bad.
  • This is why tumblr exists.
  • Star Trek.
  • Kitten.
  • Cute tornado going to mess you up.
  • Like a billion story prompts.  This should be a tv show.
  • I don't really know java, but I don't think it's that essential to follow this story.  There are so many good bits here.  "Javanisse".  "J wind".  "Remember the future."

Thursday: I continued to be disappointed in the crossover, all the way to the end.

Mostly because Green Arrow was all, "I don't trust you, Supergirl, so I want you to sit out like the entire episode instead of punching things while smiling.  I hate smiling, and by association, I apparently hate you, because I am why we can't have nice things."  I don't understand this, because after watching the other shows, Supergirl is so much better than them it's not fair.  Maybe her show will be garbage after however many seasons, when they have to deal with a dozen people who have stupid motivations and don't smile, but it isn't yet.  The only other people who are marginally entertaining are Ray Palmer (who is played by that guy who was Superman once), and Drax the Destroyer whoever the fuck that other guy is, even though he's kind of a jerk, since they totally just stole Drax's personality.

This is today's stolen gif.  Flash smiles sometimes, so he's the best other-universe character, I guess.

The moon was a tiny sliver, but it was cloudy.
Ok, so there was an Eevee, but I kind of wanted to take a picture of this dog, so you can't see the Eevee that's off camera to the left.

Friday: Veteran's Day.

So the second holiday of this week and this month.  I wasn't sure what I wanted for lunch, so I kept putting off getting up, and then it became too late to drive to Kapolei to get a burger.  At least that's what I told myself.
So I went to Aina Haina to get soup.  Also a sandwich, half of which is in my fridge waiting for me to decide if I'm hungry again.
In any case, while I was ordering, I felt something brush up against my leg, and was very confused, because whatever had brushed against me was very fuzzy.
Incredibly cute and fuzzy.  I was being sneaky taking the picture, so that's why I didn't retake a "non blurry face" picture.
When I left, I noticed that the sun was setting, and that it was going to make driving home annoying.  So despite deciding that it was "too late" to drive a long distance, I decided to drive home by going the long way around and then back over the Pali.

Along the way I stopped at the Lanai Lookout.
Why's it called that?
Because you can see Lanai.  I think Molokai is visible on the left as well, but even after playing with the contrast, I couldn't get them to pop out very well.
I couldn't decide where I wanted the center of my panorama.
Lanai?

Or the sunset?
I also realized while driving that I do thinks differently than most people.  First thing: when I need to brake, but not completely stop, I tend to tap the brake pedal to the beat of the music I'm listening to.  The second thing I noticed last time I was visiting San Francisco.  My car auto-corrects to "driving straight."  This means that when I'm done turning, I can usually just let go of the wheel a bit (so it slides under my hand) and then grab it again when the car's going straight.  Julie's car doesn't do this, so I have to actively re-stear it back after the turn.

Monday: I keep thinking that when I do the history picture thing, I should make a back-dated post if I don't already have one.

Then I could just link back to that post.  While looking for something today, I discovered that last year today I had the pork chop meal I had yesterday.  Also: eight years ago today I went to a church carnival in Michigan.

This seemed to be a good picture, because I didn't need to blur any faces.

This one too, for the same reason.

Saturday: Good.

So I woke up this morning to this:
It was magical.
Tony Scalia, human bag of shit, finally died.  It's a wonderful thing, even if the Senate is going to pretend that they actually care about the country.  "The people should be able to vote on who gets appointed."  They did, motherfuckers.  Three years ago when they decided Mitt Romney was a plutocrat asshole.  Even still, this means if Anthony Kennedy doesn't feel like being decent, the vote will be 4-4.  What does that mean?  Turns out Vox has an article explicitly with the title "Here's what happens."  Thanks, Vox.

Also, Kennedy was appointed and confirmed in the last year of Reagan's presidency, so that's kind of a nice precedent.  He was confirmed after Bork wasn't.  "Oh, but that's because Democrats were mean and prevented a perfectly valid candidate from being on the court!"  No.  Robert Bork was a bag of shit too.  Read that section.  Wow, that's certainly not legal.  Read the next section.  Wow, that's kind of a dick move.  Read the first paragraph of the next section.  Fucking poll taxes are fine?  Wow.  What a bag of shit.

And I just want to link to Wrath Hover Ginsbot again.  Because she's great.

Anyway, then I eventually got up and did my actual plan for the day.  First up, burger time.

From the Counter.
They've really gone downhill.  The "oven roasted tomatoes" were cold cherry tomatoes.  Who puts whole cherry tomatoes on a burger?  Usually it's slices, and they're nicely dehydrated and it works great.  These were just cold wet messes.  Gross.  Plus, they made everything else cold.  Even the fries.  Which makes me think that they just didn't serve me my food when it was done.  And do you notice what's not on that plate?  Yeah, the buffalo wing sauce.  Where did it go?  I'm guessing Jimmy Bartender didn't type the order correctly before leaving at the end of his shift.  I'm also pretty sure that Jane Bartender shouldn't need to fight the computer thing just to find my bill.  Just not a good trip.

Chronologically, this photo is out of place with the story, but that's how it goes.

The moon was a nice cool crescent.  It is still impossible to take a picture of it with my phone.  I did get a nice streetlight glow, though.
Anyway, the main part of the day's plan: movie time.

Yet another comic book movie.
It was a good movie.  It's pretty much what you should expect from a Deadpool movie.  People die in gratuitously violent ways, he breaks the fourth wall, it's generally silly.  More nudity than I was expecting, although it seems like they pre-counted how much they could show and still get their R rating.  Which, given that there's a scene where Deadpool cuts off someone's head, and then flings it at somebody else, is a bit ridiculous.  I'm pretty sure I've seen Deadpool spelling things with dead bodies in a comic before, as well, but can't seem to find it right now.  I'll put a few additional thoughts in the links.
