Wednesday: Prince Kuhio Day

This Prince Kuhio.  He was a prince of the Kingdom of Hawaii, and after the overthrow, because the territorial delegate to the US Congress.  Because of him, I get the day off.

Which means I can watch random daytime TV, and discover the greatest pun ever in an episode of Wordgirl on PBS.  The "Garfunkel Gallery Art Auction."

But before that, I made my own patty melt.  I used my perfect recipe, and achieved another wonderful result.   I did switch from the 10 inch skillet for the bread to the 12 inch one.  This gave me far more area to play with, so I didn't have to worry about the pan being as crowded.

Blurry side one!
Blurry side two!  The pale part is where the bread buckles up away from the pan.
Blurry cut shot!
Mostly in focus pic with the salt and pepper chips, and the bottom of a bottle of my secret horde of Mexican Coke.  Which I was going to link back to, but I guess I never wrote about it.  It's this, and I don't understand why this isn't a standard item.

Wednesday: Ash Wednesday

Ash!
Unfortunately, I didn't come up with this pun.  However, I'm immune from consequences.

"Immune!"
I also didn't discover this fact until last night, when I discovered that I'd missed pancake day.
Something that I corrected today by going to my local Reputable Pancakery.

  • Productivity.
  • Sucky internet has obvious reasons for being sucky.
  • I remember things like this.  The one thing I've failed at finding on the internet is a monthly "activity packet" thing that I got as a kid.  I particularly remember one for the 1984 Olympics, as that was when I learned about Greece the country, and about homophones.
  • Relax, PG.  You've got three options: 1) Fly yourself and Canary up to the roof, and then take the elevator down. 2) Break out a window, and assume you can "I'm PowerGirl" that away." 3) Take the elevator like a fucking normal person, you jerk.
  • Watching RT news is always kind of entertaining.  Partially because it's almost comical how all stories have a "of course, this is all America's fault" kind of tacked on, regardless of how applicable that is.  For external news viewpoints, Al-Jazeera is almost always going to be better than RT.

Sunday: Sun day

Other than me messing with panorama projections, what's odd with this photo?
Trans-Mercator.  For when regular Mercator doesn't quite look right.  This one bends buildings, but seems to preserve a flat horizon pretty well.
Luckily, last night I put the TV on local news as a "figure out what to do for dinner, and until you do: local news" strategy.  That led me to hearing that today is Honolulu's "Lahaina Noon" day.

What's that?

Basically, since Hawaii is in the tropics, there are two days each year where the sun is directly overhead.  Like it is on the equator on equinoxes, or on the tropics on solstices. I'll have to catch the second one on July 15th, if I can.

In any case, here are random close-ups of things without shadows.
That's the power line.

I should have taken a picture of the top, so you can see all the stuff there.  You can see it in the panorama on top, though.

Sign.

Vent pipes.

More different vent pipes.

This sign has a shadow.  If you look closely, though, you can see that it's because this sign is crooked.

Parasailer.

Plane.

I liked this one.

My hands, holding the camera taking this picture.

Thursday: Everyone does puns today

And I bought this today:
See, I like math, and I like puns, but I just don't have the love for this one that everyone else seems to have.

Sunday: Now I remember why I don't go to that mall very often.

It's super crowded, parking is terrible, and it doesn't have anything that I can't find elsewhere with less hassle.

Then I went to Target.
Wait, what?
How are these different than these sippy cups that were recalled last year? The ones last year would only poke out one eye at a time.

  • This is the best mineral in existence.
  • Today's Pokemon joke.
  • I did not care about the Oscars as much as the entire rest of the world.  Nice to see somebody realized that kicking out someone who just won one was a bad idea.

Friday: Where are the trade winds?

How is October the hottest month I can remember?  Stupid tropics.
I've apparently only downloaded Batman and Adventure Time gifs that aren't appropriate for today for the past week.  Have this plane moon instead.

Wednesday: I am falling asleep

Squirrel!

I'm not telling you how to do your job, NYTimes, but I'm sure you could have come up with a great pun if you'd only looked a little harder.

Tuesday: Slow news day

First, no calzone today.  I forgot to take one out of the freezer last night, so they were frozen solid and stuck to the plate.  Oops.  I'd considered parbaking them before freezing, but didn't do that (mostly because I wanted to be done cooking).  Parbaking would have kept the outside dough solid (unlike the raw state) without requiring extreme cold temperatures.  I'm hoping that they're thawed enough later (or tomorrow) that I can wrap two in freezer paper before putting them back in the freezer.  I got salad stuff, so I think I'm going  try to get two dinners out of each calzone.  That also means that keeping them in the freezer is the better idea.

Second, when I was in the UK, I kept seeing these chips everywhere:
Given that almost every place was also filled with Salt and Vinegar (who even likes those?), I decided to get a bag, turning down the equally interesting "Prawn Cocktail."  These were delicious.  They taste exactly like bacon, despite being totally vegetarian and containing zero meat (bacon or otherwise).  Hooray for chemicals and science, I guess.

Upon returning home, I saw these chips in the store:
Side note: Walkers is the name that Lay's are sold under in the UK.  That's why the logos are the same.
I had hoped that they'd be similar to the smokey bacon flavor, since they clearly know how to make that (and bacon is super popular right now).  They're not, but they're also not terrible.  There's a "toast" flavor that kind of dominates, with little to no LT flavors coming through.  It's a bit disappointing that the UK has better bacon chips.

Third, this bear-y:
"What are you doing, strawberry? You're not a bear, you don't even have claws!"
"What are you doing, bear? You're not a strawberry, you don't even...no, wait, I guess you are a strawberry. Nevermind."

  • Photoshopped, but it raises a question: Why doesn't Nintendo license Pokemon designs to car manufacturers?  I'd buy a pika-car.
  • I still hate Ross Douthat, because he's dumb.  Besides, why would the Democrats take advice from someone who is pretty consistently shown he's against them?
  • Well, I don't have a third link today. Here's a song about tacos.

A calmer, less data-panicky post about links

No.

This never ever made sense to me. Why are there four of them?
Sigh. Cosplay girl Links are also not what I meant.
I'm never sure why I commit to puns against myself like this.  It probably makes me look crazy.

Oh shut up, puppies. You don't need to give me that face.

Thanks, Bear. You're clearly on my side. The side of Truth, Justice, and the Laziest Way Possible.
Interesting note, tomorrow (or today if we go with clock delineated dates and not sleep delineated) is the first anniversary of me posting everyday. Or 99% of everyday.  If we count days I posted more than once, I'm clearly in the positive territory on this count.  Let's celebrate:
With a happy walking Pikachu. My celebration images are a bit limited, I guess.
  • Squirrels!
  • Art deco pineapple ad! Seriously, if you buy pineapple, buy Hawaiian.  It's significantly better, and I'm not just saying that because I live here.  I was picky about this before I moved from Michigan.
  • There's a point where forcing puns into something makes it illegible.  I can only understand about half of this menu.  I'm also pretty sure that "Mama's Pie" and "Scotch Salmon-Trout" are things I will never care to eat.
  • Parrot vs jello covered fruit.

Friday: Food puns

I went to the doctor today. Turns out I'm healthier than last year. Woo.  Also turns out that I've gone more blind since last time I got glasses.  Less woo.  However, I did order new glasses, so hopefully those will arrive fairly quickly, so I'll be able to see things that are all fuzzy right now.  I was a bit lazy on the frames, and got something close to what I have now.  What's up with all the glasses that have super fat ear pieces?  Did everyone decide that peripheral vision was overrated?

Anyway, healthier than last year.
So I had this for dinner.

Monday: tacos and customer service

I didn't take a picture of my tacos, but everyone knows what tacos look like.
 No.
 Seriously? No.

Anyway, after dinner I spent close to two hours trying to book a flight via phone using travel coupons that I got from a previous screwed up flight.  After telling the guy that I understood all of the stupid conditions on these things, he decided that he couldn't book the flight I wanted because it used a partner airline that isn't the right kind of partner.  I then kept him on the line while I found a better flight, that was cheaper, that met all of his requirements for using the coupon.

"I can't see that flight."

"This flight? This flight that I can totally see."

"I have the most up-to-date information on my computer, so the webpage is lying to you."

"Really? So seat 12F? That doesn't exist?"

"No, Sir, it does not."

"Not at all?"

"No, that flight cannot be booked."

"So this confirmation number that I just got via email?  That's a lie too?"

"Um...what?"

Yep.  Apparently the phone reservation people don't actually have any clue what they're doing, and you can do everything and more via the webpage.  Unless of course you want to use a travel coupon because they screwed up a previous flight.  Then, you basically have to prove to them that it can be done, they just didn't do it right, and then talk to the supervisor who twiddles enough switches to allow you to do what you tried to do when you first called.

This ignores where the reservation guy tried to sell me a flight $600 more expensive than the webpage came up with.

Anyway...

Squirtle! (via some photoshop phriday at something awful I'm sure I've seen before. Also, Julie.)

The Pikachu you see just before the blood stops pouring from your wounds, as your eyes slowly cloud over, and you hear the cold cackles of death: (via hell itself)

Also, the guy who played Baron Munchausen died. If you haven't seen that movie, you really should check it out.  It's more coherent than the book, and more humorous than the Nazi version. Also: fewer Nazis involved in the production.
