Sunday: Perhaps waiting until the last day, with a super early morning flight was a bad time to start discussing grown up things.

Oh well.  That's kind of How It Has Always Been.

I should buy a UPS.

Always gym battles.

Painting is kind of fun.
But, like most things, I probably need to accept that things won't always turn out the way I want, and just be happy with how close I can get.
This jerk is in research tasks now?

Who are these people, and why have I not heard of them before?
Anyway, one more day here, then travel, then trying to clean up all the things that I messed up while on vacation.

Tuesday: Making a todo list helped today.

Amazon apparently decided all my suggested stations had to have the same pose.

Tuesday: Internet Day!

The best day ever!

Also vacuum day.  Which is cool, and now I know I probably could have taken the vacuum apart in Alameda and saved me $45, but whatever.  I can vacuum my floors now.  I also probably should remember not to answer my door with a box cutter in the future.  I was cleaning up my recycling, which surprisingly, I was able to do in a single trip.  Including all my bin recycling, and the trash.

Having actual internet is great, because I can listen to a youtube video of a song I heard this morning while watching a youtube video I would have watched a long ago if I'd had internet constantly.

The internet hookup went reasonably well, with the install guy having to do only a few tests and things before it was up and running.  I then spent way too much time trying to configure the wifi router to use a static upstream IP address before just giving up and installing a dhcpd server to give it the IP address.  I think I've made the parameters permanent, but I may have to reconfigure wireless if the power goes out again.

Which it did today.

Because it was raining.  A lot.  Like a proper thunderstorm.
While driving, I've set my radio to remember something like four NPR stations.  Also one "other" station that I first thought was the university station, a random techno station, and a 70s funk station.  It turns out to be something of all of those, so here are songs I've heard and had google identify for me.

I should maybe find a way to get these albums.

Wednesday: The last night in the Bay Area

For an unknown period of time, that is.  I'll probably be back someday, for some reason, but I definitely won't be coming here as regularly as I have been.  It's a bit sad, to leave the place where you probably should have been on the lease, and maybe should have paid some rent.  Oh well.

I have a hotel room scheduled in Reno for tomorrow night.  It's a bit of a lazy start to the trip, but that's how it goes.  I might push extra hard the next day, but we'll see when that happens.

Another thing that happened today was the release of Utada Hikaru's new album.  I found a site of questionable legality yesterday, as neither Amazon nor Google had it listed.  It popped up on Amazon late last night, so I grabbed it there.  None of the songs jumped out at me, but I had it on quietly, and not in the proper "loud blasting" method I usually use.  We'll see tomorrow.

I saw the moon set this morning.
 And one last time:
KBBQ.
 Is delicious.
Extra fatty brisket is the best.

Sunday: It turns out Safeway deli chicken tandoori samosas are much better than you'd expect.

I thought about going to get garlic shrimp from the shrimp truck, and stopping to get a Dole whip on the way back.  Unfortunately I got out of bed too late for that to happen.
So I said farewell to Kono's instead.
I also didn't see Deadpool this weekend.  Hrm.

Wednesday: Things I'm pretty sure are mistakes: Skin. Joints.

It has been eleven years, and I do not know if the awareness has been kept up.

  • Awful person leaves, probably to do awful stuff again elsewhere.
  • Gwenpool, what have you done?  Introducing Doreen to a punchable "The Devil" means she's like two naps and a homework assignment away from "Tippy Toe and Doreen Solve Evil In One Long Afternoon."  It will be brilliant, but it will also royally donk up theology.
  • Utaka Hikaru has a new album coming out this year.  June 27.  I will be driving that day.  I hope Amazon will have it ready for me.

Friday: Like, it became an obsession.

Kalbi.  As the day came to a close, I decided I wanted kalbi.  Looking over pictures of KBBQ on my blog didn't help, as that just made me want kalbi even more.  That eventually led to me deciding to just go get some at the fast food Korean place by work that I never go to.

The kalbi.
I should go there more often than never.  This wasn't a cheap plate, coming in at like $17, but that's with four veggies (I doubled up on the potatoes, because I like those potatoes, even if they aren't as good as the Gogi Time ones).  All the veggies are cold, which I guess isn't a big deal.  I should have gotten mandoo, which are just gyoza with a pseudonym.

In any case, the kalbi is thin, and that means it gets cold fast, and it means that the fat doesn't cooperate as much as it would on a thicker slice.  Still, the meat has good flavor, is tender away from the fatty bits, and they put a nice char on it.  The rice soaks up all the delicious kalbi flavor, and this totally covered what I wanted it to.

Now I have to decide if this means I don't get USBBQ this weekend, and if this means I don't try a hot pot place as well.

In unrelated notes, I was reading my new Squirrel Girl trade, and I saw this, and thought, "well, that's probably the greatest panel in this comic, wow Nancy is great":
Nancy doesn't like it when you touch her friends with your grabby hands.
But then, later, the same issue came up with not only the greatest panel in this comic, but probably one of the greatest panels in a comic ever:
It's not this one, but it's good to get the lead in.
 It's this one:
Don't mess with Doreen.
In final news, I discovered that if I let my name classification code use recent names from the SSA, then it actually correctly classes a bunch of names I had to add exceptions for.  It turns out that after about 2008 or so, there's an influx of names that aren't in previous years.  I'd had a thought that recent names would be useful when I wrote the first version, but never sat down to actually look at the details.

  • This is here specifically for the Clow Reed one.
    • (It's the one about problems and solutions).
  • I heard a song by this artist/group on the way home from work, so it's in a tab right now, so it's a link.
    • How does Soundcloud work?  Can you download things?  Is there a way to buy albums?  I really like this "S-Trig" one.
  • Today is Sailor Moon's birthday.
  • I watched this video like four times last week, because "let's watch the glitter cat video!" kept being requested.
  • I'm tempted to print out some of these.
  • Deadpool/Spider-Man.
  • I would have liked to see a bit of code, but the main point is that this blog post quantifies what I thought: France is full of old people.
  • For the two that I watch enough to care about, this is pretty much exactly my thoughts.
  • That's kind of a cool image classification method.
  • A) It's stupid that this happens at all.  B) "He said he disliked her ideas so he behaved the way he did to make her go away."  Yeah.  Sure.  That's a totally normal way to deal with people.

Friday: You don't have the votes.

Unfortunately I have to wait until I actually publish to make sure I have the cut points right.  In any case, it was nice to see that Republicans have no clue how to govern.  That minimizes the damage they can do.  I suspect this also means that the ACA is going to be around basically forever now.  I also strongly suspect that a lot of states run by Republicans are going to start scrambling for the Medicare expansion.  It's fine to rant about how you don't want it when you think there's a chance it'll go away, but now it's just being petty and wanting to hurt their own citizens.

Not that it hasn't always been petty and hurting citizens.

Bitsy Burrito.

And how bad do you think it feels to be Paul Ryan, and have Papa Roach make fun of you?  And to have them turn out to be surprisingly cool?

Monday: Hamilton is too long.

I came up with a great plan this morning.  I was going to drive to Mililani, get Five Guys for lunch, drive back to town, take H-3 to the other side of the island, and then drive back around the long way to Hawaii Kai, where I'd pick up a sandwich at Jersey Mike's for dinner, and then drive home.  "This will surely be a long enough drive that I will finally be able to hear all of the Hamilton soundtrack, even if it will be broken up into a few segments due to the stops.  I am sure I will get through it all.  I mean, it's only 142 minutes and 13 seconds.  Google is telling me this trip will take nearly two and a half hours, and I can always add on a quick trip out to the airport if I get close to home and it's not done yet.  That will add like another 15-20 minutes to the trip.

I should have known I was in trouble when I got here, and I was only at "Right Hand Man."

I assume part of the problem is that Google assumed there'd be traffic, and with the holiday today, there wasn't really any traffic.

Similarly, not being done with the first disk by the time I got here wasn't a good sign.
I haven't heard the whole thing before, but I have enough passing knowledge to know that there was a lot of his life to get through, and I just wasn't going at an acceptable rate.

"Schuyler Defeated".  I should have realized I was defeated at this point, too.
I added the extension to the airport, but I had to admit it wasn't going to work by that point.  I sat in the car to let "The Election of 1800" finish, but stopped there.  Alex is still alive, his son isn't, and Jefferson is president.

ETA: I just checked my google maps search, and it claimed 2:38 for that trip, but I just noticed that in click-dragging to make the long way trip to Jersey Mike's, I clicked the wrong segment, so it had me doing the H-1 through town segment four times.  That's why I wasn't able to finish the soundtrack.

Wednesday: My phone did not die.

Party City is a weird place.  Most of the birthday party theme things have large vertical stripes of an aisle, with all the plates, cups, napkins, and decorations.  I saw this when I walked in, and figured that it would be easy to find Moana.  Right?  I walked down the aisle twice, the first time looking for the big dividing signs, the second looking at the faces on the plates (which are all on the same shelf).  Nothing.  I had to go and ask, and was told I was in the right place, but that it's at the very end of the aisle, on the left.
WTF.
Moana does not get a big display, it gets a shelf in the "stuff kids don't care about" section.  Tsum Tsums?  Emoji?  Whatever the fuck "PJ Masks" is?

So I got what I could, including the key lime green plasticware that they suggest on their webpage.
I didn't get the favor cup, but since I'm going to have to try and see if they get the plates restocked, I can always pick it up then.  They get deliveries on Tuesday and Friday.
Then I got dinner, and was concerned that my phone was going to die.
It didn't, and I also learned today that the Hamilton soundtrack is part of the free music that comes with Amazon Prime.  So I'll eventually hear it all.

Friday: Ugh. Malls.

Since they redesigned it, Ala Moana is not a terrible place to park.  I assume part of that is them preparing to be the terminus of the rail line, but there are always parking spaces now.  I think the sign said there were like 2000 open ones.  However, people are remarkably stupid, and I saw a bunch turning onto floors that were clearly labeled as having 20 open spaces.  People are dumb.

The other problem is that getting to, and getting out of the mall is still difficult.  Keaaumoku is a pain to get down, because there are so many lights, and people always want to turn left.  It's the same problem leaving the mall: everyone has to filter through the same exits, and it takes forever to do that.

You'll also notice that this katsudon is at home.  There were no seats in Shirokiya, because the tables were filled with people who were drinking beer and don't know how to share common tables.

I mean, what could possibly be better than that?
I also decided today that this is my new favorite song ever:

Utada Hikaru: Boku wa Kuma (I am a Bear).

First up, my grandparents had a console television like that one on top.  I always thought console televisions were cool.  But the main point is that it lists the size as 295 square inches.  "How big is that?" I thought.

Old TVs were 4:3 aspect ratio, and measured based on the diagonal length (because ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but that's at least what I vaguely know).  So that means that:

  1. r^2 = 4 * a^2 + 3 * a^2 = 25 a^2
  2. Area = (4a)*(3a) = 12 a^2
  3. Area = 12 / 25 r^2; r = sqrt(25/12 * Area)
  4. It'd be r = sqrt(337 / 144 * Area) for modern 16:9 TVs.
So it's a 24.791 inch television, which I think makes it roughly the same size as my old TV.

Sunday: I decided I wanted to drive.

But first, Twitter seems to be down, and my first instinct was to ask on Twitter if Twitter was broken.  I do not like having Twitter down, as it feels like I've lost an extra sense that is always there, feeding me information.  Hopefully it'll be resolved by the time I finish this post.

In any case, I've really been enjoying the new Utada Hikaru album, so I decided to get lunch someplace far enough away that I could listen to most of it.  And I kind of wanted a greasy burger.

So Five Guys.  With another Dr. Strange sticker.  Thanks, Twitter.
It was good, but I really wish there was a $2 "sane number of fries" option.  Like, I want something like a dozen fries.  I have a monster burger, and really just want the fries to offer a variation.  I don't need a cup, plus an equal amount of not-cup fries in the bag.  Technically I also don't need that vat of ketchup, and that one's on me.

Then, I decided I wasn't done driving.

So whoops, Kaneohe.  I probably should have fixed this to have a better dynamic range.
But that's ok, even before making the mosaic, I knew I wanted to have some single shots anyway.
I just liked this one, because the way the sun is illuminating the tree.

And this one shows the mountain with the nice cloud cap that I saw better when I was driving back.  I guess it's a lenticular cloud?  It's cool.
 So then I went home.

You'll note that this shows me not going home.  Traffic at my exit was horrible, because it's badly designed (the Pali merges onto part of Punchbowl, which then merges with H-1, and the same lane is the exit onto Kinau, which is used by a lot of people to get to Waikiki), so I decided to just skip it and turn around in a less busy area.
This was apparently fortuitous, as I noticed this while sitting at the last stop light before home:
And it kindly stayed the same until I was able to get home and safely take a picture with my car in park and the brake engaged.  Because the movie yesterday had an explicit end credit about not using a phone while driving.  Since that's what did Dr. Strange's surgeon career in.
And Twitter's back.

Friday: Music, and other things.

I don't understand Amazon Prime music streaming.  "Why?  It's like free music!"

Yes, but it's like literally free music.  I wanted to listen to a song, saw the album had free prime streaming, and tried to listen to it on my computer.  Except Linux isn't supported for prime streaming, so it doesn't work.

But I can download it on my phone.  I know this, because during my Christmas/New Years travelling last year, I was able to use the airport wifi to identify a song that was playing as I boarded a plane, and since it was available for free prime streaming, and I could download it, I downloaded the song, the album, and two more from the same group.  Given that the band name was Thievery Corporation, I thought this was kind of funny.
Are the files encrypted on my tablet, then?  I guess so?  Also, what's the point of having "stations" if the station list is just a jumbled pile of everything?  I have something like 800 songs that I've added to my amazon mp3 library (between albums with auto-rip and directly buying things).  That isn't enough for it to come up with some sort of "maybe you'll like this station" recommendation thing?

Also, this cookie perfectly represents "Gimme Chocolate".
Since I couldn't use my work computer to stream things, I bought the newest Passepied album, "Shaba Lover".  It's pretty much the same as their previous ones.  Very good synthesizer work and complementary guitar and bass, with aggressively high pitched lyrics.  This album is a bit over compressed, so some of the peaks are saturated, but it's not as bad as other albums.  Conveniently, the publisher has one of the songs from this album on youtube, because it's a theme song for the newest Rumiko Takahashi anime:

In any case, I still wanted to listen to that Babymetal album, and I couldn't decide what to have for dinner, because nothing sounded good.

But a drive over the Pali to Kailua to get a burrito would solve both of those.

It was pretty good, but I wish they'd pull the ribs from the lettuce.
To interrupt the music discussion, why would you go to a burrito place and get a bowl?  It was super busy, and everyone had to have a bowl.  Clearly it's not for health reasons, given Mr. "Can I get double meat in my bowl?"  Burritos are better than bowls, and burritos with queso would be superior still.

Anyway, Babymetal popped up in my youtube videos yesterday, because they were on Colbert sometime this week.  I'd heard "Gimme Chocolate" on the jpop station here back before the jpop station went away.  Listening to the whole album, it's mostly just standard jpop with some heavy metal paint slapped on.  I was surprised when I got to "Headbanger."  That's explicitly a Visual Kei song.  Here's a far better discussion of Babymetal than I could ever come up with that I found when I searched to figure out what the connection was.

Because I'm talking about music today, I'll put this Bad Lip Reading parody song about Star Wars here.  It's good, and worth listening to.

Finally, because I keep forgetting to talk about it, Minecraft on my tablet has supported maps since the last update, so I'm finally able to see what my first world looks like.

The green dot is the location of the map, inside my main fortress.  You can see a gap in the trees leading south towards the lake, where I have the lake house built on that peninsula.  There's also the bridge to the west that leads to the world spawn point, where I have a small outpost with important things that I can use to get back to the main base if something bad happens with my bed.  Finally, there's the bridge to the east that leads to the plains hut, which is the starting point for my explorations of the abandoned mineshaft that's over there.  This has also forced me to start farming sugarcane (needed for making paper) and cows (needed for the leather for the item frames to display the maps on the wall).
The rest of the links start with another youtube video.

Friday: No, google. No. Stop it.

Why do you think that's something anyone would want?

And I have legitimately never heard of any of these other people.  Google searching for them suggests that Google Play has attempted to choose the most diverse set of music genres possible for this email.

In other music news, I spent today listening to all of my Emerson, Lake, & Palmer, as Keith Emerson died today.  That story is also significantly sadder than the one I read earlier in the day that didn't list a cause of death.

In less depressing news, I finally got my mailbox open:

Inside of which I discovered that I had a near monopoly on package mailbox keys.  I think there are twelve boxes, and I had three of them.  Whoops.
What's inside?  You'll have to wait, as I'm too lazy to re-arrange photos.  So instead, have this interlude of refrigerator things.

What's that?

It's the "my name" written by my good friend Ramona.  You can see how it has all the letters in my name, all in one word.  I told her I'd put it up on my fridge, and although I did that earlier in the week, I didn't take a picture until today.
"What's that over on the other side?" you ask?
That's a grocery list and house/tree doodle that I found in my pocket before doing laundry sometime last year.

Back to things I forgot I ordered from Amazon, but Amazon didn't, because that's kind of their job:

Oh cool!  That Nine Inch Nails/David Bowie live album I preordered like months ago!

Neat-o!  Part three of this Vampire Hunter D novel that I don't have parts 1 or 2 for, because when I ordered that volume, it was not-fulfilled by a scammer who was kicked off Amazon for taking money and never shipping!  I should really re-order that volume, since otherwise I'll be totally lost.
Ha ha, jk.  VHD is my preferred book to read while travelling, because it's wonderfully written garbage that requires no thinking.  If you ripped out all of the detailed descriptions and things like that, all VHD novels, and by association, both movies, can be summarized as follows:

Town: "Wow, it sure sucks that we're being terrorized by horrible monsters."
Vampire: "Hey, come on, I only eat like three people a month.  You can totally deal with that.  Besides, I keep everyone safe."
Town: "What about the giant acid owls?  Those guys are killing so many people!"
Vampire: "Pfft...whatever."

Beautiful Female Character: "I will fight the giant acid owls!  Then I will kill the vampire!"
Dumb Boyfriend Character: "I will do it instead!  Because I'm a boy!  Ha!"
BFC: "No, you idiot!  I'm actually a space wizard or something!  You're just some bumpkin!"
DBC: "That explains why I'm dead now.  Whoops."

BFC: "Are you the Vampire Hunter mysteriously named 'D'?  Please, you have to save our town!"
Vampire Hunter D: "No, seriously, I'm just staying the night, I have to go find my dad, Dracula, and kill him because I hate that he brought me to life.  Wait, sorry:"  "No."
BFC: "We can pay you some money, maybe?  Plus, it's not just giant acid owls.  We have a vampire too."
VHD: "Fine."

Vampire: "So, you defeated my giant acid owls!  You can never stop me!  I've been a vampire for thousands of years!"
VHD's Left Hand: "I am actually a parasitic entity that offers snide commentary and do magic tricks, including but not limited to 1) sucking things into a pocket dimension; 2) consuming dirt and stuff to spy on enemies; 3) bringing D back to life when he inevitably gets staked.  Because he's a half vampire."
Vampire: "Wait, did your left hand just talk?"
VHD: "..."
Vampire: "I'm dead now, aren't I.  Fuck.  This went badly for me."

BFC: "Thank you for saving the town.  I kind of have a 50-50 shot to be alive at this point.  Seriously, VHD, you're pretty hard on your companions during these stories."
VHD: "Yes."

In any case, a quick google search suggests that I'm not even half-way through the stories,

Also in the mail:

So, here's the story on this one:
Over the weekend, this item showed up in my RSS feeds, and I thought, "huh.  Ok.  I wonder if Amazon has that."  It turns out that yes, Amazon has pretty much everything, and so $20 later, I had a 1930 edition travelling across country to me.

And the affiliate who shipped it did an excellent job of wrapping it in tissue paper and cardboard to prevent any more damage.  Plus they have cute logos.  Good job, BetweenTheCovers.com.

Continuing the "shit I got today" theme, the Girl Scouts were selling Girl Scout Cookies at the grocery store today.  "You don't take credit cards, do you?"  "This is 2016.  Of course we take credit cards."

I'm not entirely sure that the scout who took my order was fully prepared for my response to her pitch.  "Our best sellers are:

"Thin mints,
"Samoas,
"And Tagalongs."
"Yes, I'll do just that.  One of each."  When the credit card phone arrived, I had to re-place my order using the silly names.  Not my internal names of "the coconut ones", "those fucking ones that have like two cookies in the box, but there's a giant gob of peanut butter on top of each one", and "thin mints."

Oh look, I have a billion links again today.

  • Food.
    • I was thinking about pastries today, and remembered the jelly filled pigs from that one place.  Then I couldn't remember the name of the place, just that it was a silly name.  Pastry House Hippo.
    • Karaage.
    • Ramen.  I think they rated Tenkaiipin too low, but I'm somewhat biased.
  • I actually have enough links for an 80s synth pop category.
  • Comic book stuff.
    • I haven't seen Howard the Duck in close to thirty years, but I remember liking it when I was a kid.
      • Also, remember above when I said that Amazon has everything?  Everything except the Howard the Duck movie for prime streaming.  I would have watched that this evening, but I'm not going to pay $4 for it.
    • Maybe that's the reason I'm not super enthusiastic about this movie?
    • Peggy Carter and Jarvis with their cell phones.
  • Politics and shit.
    • Ha ha ha!  It's great to see conservatives realize that lying for years and being generally awful has consequences.
    • This is an important point on jobs and trade, and is mostly here because I was thinking about this topic while driving home from work.  That thought mostly involved the contradiction in the two claims that "NAFTA shipped jobs to Mexico" and "Mexicans are coming to the country illegally to steal our jobs."  Those both can't be true.
    • Breaking news: Monopolistic cable companies will do whatever it takes to continue to extract excessive fees from customers who have no good competition!
  • "That's the opposite of a problem."
    • "That's the opposite of a problem!"
    • Ok, but, see: look at this.  Castle in the Sky on the 2nd.  Kiki's Delivery Service on the 9th.  Spirited Away on the 16th.  Howl's Moving Castle on the 23rd.  The Wind Rises on the 30th.  It's even worse when I googled it, and saw that Kapolei is showing Mononoke, Nausicaa, and Marnie, and Koko Marina is showing Totoro and Whisper of the Heart.  I haven't even seen WotH!  :-/  Basically, my entire April looks like I'm going to be living at the movie theaters.

Hm.  I guess I'm not finishing that British Museum post tonight.
