Um. Ok?

I'm sitting at home, eating dinner.  A drug commercial comes on, and I'm thoroughly confused.  This isn't the exact same commercial as the one I saw (my old guy had two granddaughters, not the single grandson in this one), but it's sufficiently close for me to take screen shots of the animated side story.

The Big Bad Wolf is harassing the three pigs again.

But he's old now.

And can't get up enough breath to blow their house down, presumably so he can murder and eat them, as-you-do.

Nope.  Not working.

Guess it's time to go home instead.

"Yay!  No destruction of property and murder for us today!  Thank you, COPD!"

"Yeah, Doc, I don't know.  I just can't blow houses down anymore.  That's like 70% of my job!"

"That's because you have COPD, an obstructive lung disease that makes it difficult for your lungs to function properly."

"Symbicort can help!"

And it does help.

Those candles didn't stand a chance.

And then everyone has cake, because the wolves have a vibrant modern society in which they can purchase cakes and celebrate both birthdays and the wonders of pharmaceuticals.

What happens the next day?

An idea!

"Look at those smug motherfucking pigs."

"I think it's time for some ham sandwiches!"

I'm not saying that AstraZeneca, a global pharmaceutical corporation, is really suggesting that the strong should pillage and murder the weak, but that's kind of the vibe I get from this commercial.  Or, I guess we can go with the youtube uploader's comment:

That's an option.

Thursday: Oh, ok.

I had to do the history picture thing again for today.

Today is the day that seven years ago I flew home to Michigan from my first visit to Hawaii, where I flew a week before moving to attend a conference.
It's also the day that four years ago I made this post about pinhole cameras.  It still gets hits when there are eclipses.

  • Comic book stuff.
    • I finally watched an episode of Legends of Tomorrow, mostly to check that I do get a CW so I'll be able to watch Supergirl next season.  It was mostly a lot of "I have no idea who these people are, and have no emotional investment at all."  Followed by "OK, she's Hawkgirl, and he's Firestorm."  Later there was a "Firestorm blew up Vandal Savage's time machine, right?"  No.  Firestorm did not blow up Vandal Savage's time machine.  Get it together, Firestorm.
    • Patsy Walker, Hellcat, as drawn by Natasha Allegri.
    • Yeah, this is a good fan-cast for a Nextwave movie.  It will never happen, unfortunately, as Boom-Boom is a mutant, so she's in the Fox rights set.
  • Political/economics stuff.
  • Other stuff.

Wednesday: All of them.

So now I'm remaking them all.
I have a bunch of links, which I've put into useful categories.

Tuesday: That damn bird was back.

"You don't even work here!"
Today's also the finale of Agents of Shield, and because I'm smart, I used my time zone powers to read spoilers on twitter.  Since my last complain-a-thon:

  1. People did dumb things.
  2. The space monster killed all of his human people.
  3. Shakey mutant got space monster mind controlled by the space monster
  4. The Murder Monster had a secret purpose to un-mind control shakey mutant.
  5. But then he died.
  6. And she's been all super whiny about everything.
  7. The space monster kidnapped a science guy to science at things and make shitty knock-off Inhumans.
  8. I couldn't figure out why I recognized the new science guy, but it turns out he's the whiny brother from the 2000s Mummy movies.
  9. Blah blah space monster wants to bomb the world with a shitty knock-off Inhuman generating bomb.
  10. Everyone continues to do dumb things.
  11. Even the space monster.
  12. Just so many dumb things.
But, in less than a half hour, Zappy the (sorry for using the same word over and over again but) Whiny Electro-Mutant is going to trap the space monster in a tiny space ship and they blow up together and die and fucking finally I hated both of them so very much.

In other news, far better TV show Agent Carter is still cancelled because people are dumb.

  • I doubt this is really going to fix anything with the DC movies.
  • There are so many things in this panel that don't make sense.
    • Is that an electric chair?
    • I'm pretty sure "plunger switch" isn't how electric chairs work.
    • Why is Peggy kicking and punching with opposite sides?  That seems like a really painful twist.
    • I feel like someone should be shouting "USE THE GUN AS A GUN!" at that one thug.
    • Was Knifey McGee straddling her before being punched?
    • Isn't getting kicked in the back of the head make it more likely that plunger switch guy will fall on the switch?
  • I don't know how this lamp works.  Is there just a bulb hidden behind the panel?
  • Things are getting better.  The important thing is ensuring that continues.
  • Don't be a jerk, basically.
  • I am curious about this alternate Sailor Moon world.
  • Cat.

Monday: I keep thinking that when I do the history picture thing, I should make a back-dated post if I don't already have one.

Then I could just link back to that post.  While looking for something today, I discovered that last year today I had the pork chop meal I had yesterday.  Also: eight years ago today I went to a church carnival in Michigan.

This seemed to be a good picture, because I didn't need to blur any faces.

This one too, for the same reason.

Sunday: I decided on pork chop.

It was a bit dry today.  :(

  • This was in my RSS today, and it's worth clicking through to the actual interactive article.  The movie dialogue gender breakdown is even worse than I would have expected.
  • Venezuela.
  • The explanation for this is that Gwenpool is a Deadpool-like version of an alternate dimension Gwen Stacy (an ex-girlfriend of Spider-Man who died in the regular dimension when Spider-Man stopped her falling off a bridge too quickly) and the Thor here is Jane Foster, regular-Thor's friend who is now actual Thor because regular-Thor fucked something up and so is no longer worthy to use Mjolnir.
  • Mew.
  • Squirrel.

Saturday: Since my wallet died yesterday,

I had to go to the mall and have sushi.
That's how it works.

The yakitori isn't the best.  It's more "we put lots of sauce on it" and less "we grilled it and put a bit of sauce on it."

I also got a wallet, and it had so much crap jammed in it.  I need three copies of a stupid card trying to convince me how sophisticated I am because I use a wallet and don't just cram money in a zip lock bag?  Also, there are like eight slots in this one.  Who has that much crap?  Driver's license, credit card, atm card.  What else do you need?  I pulled out the removable id thing, because that's just dumb and makes it thicker.

Also, Dear Macy's, here's part of the reason you might be having trouble.  The wallet was $42.50, 30% off this weekend to $29.75.  "Here's what I'm going to do," said the lady at checkout.  "I'm going to add this $3 donation."  BEEP!  "But now I'm going to give you this extra 25% off coupon!"  BEEP!  "See, that's more than the three dollars!  It's all ok!"  Sure, lady, fine.  You want to kind of defraud your company out of $7.44?  Not my problem.

No, I do not have any idea what charity I donated $3.00 to.  I'm hoping it's not like, "Macy's Fund for Telling People Nazis Weren't Really So Bad."  Let's google it.  Oh, ok, those are fine, I guess.  Whatever.  Charity Navigator only lists one of those, though (only two stars, RIF?  WTF?).

Friday: That bird was around, but I have a different animal today.

I saw this new Tiny Gecko Friend scurry past on the hallway wall at work, so I went out to take a picture.

Thursday, May 12, 2016

Thursday: The chicken was back.

I'm not even sure it's a chicken.  Maybe it's a guineafowl
Whatever it is, it's not supposed to be in the courtyard at work.  Do you even science, bird?  This is a science place, not a "be a weirdo bird down the sidewalk" place.

Do people think this looks interesting?

It's a board game.

Here's an example of the live-action version it's based on.  I have not checked that this one is good, but they are consistently pretty decent.

Does that look interesting to people whom I am directing this question towards?  If the answer is "sure, with your money, fine," then I think I'd only get the regular edition.  If the answer is a "that actually looks like a fun game, because we tend to like games that end up really weird, Cards Against Humanity style," then I think I'll get the expanded edition with the extra cards.

The nice thing is that the funding level needed was fulfilled in two minutes, so this was guaranteed before I even read the announcement email.

Wednesday: Pretty much fuck today.

I didn't know what I wanted for lunch today, and after thinking, "maybe a salad," followed by "salads suck," I decided to stop by the other bakery.
I did not get a kimche muffin.
"Do you want to try our Portuguese sausage chili and cornbread special?"  "Does it have beans?"  "Yes, but I don't like beans either, so try it, and see if you like it!"

It was pretty good.
Ok, great, all good.  I finished, and got out a stick of gum.  A few bites in, I feel something weird in my mouth, and I think I chipped a tooth.  "On what?"  No clue.  So guess who's going to the dentist tomorrow to see how much it's going to be to fix?

Also, about the same time, I looked down and discovered that I'd dripped chili on my shirt.  Good job, me.  Great day, all around.

I'm just going to make this its own post.

Long ago, I ordered a package of lens cleaning cloths from amazon.  When they arrived, I was somewhat disappointed because they were only like 2"x4", which is a bit small when you're trying not to re-add smudges on your glasses.  I've slowly lost most of them since, so I recently decided to get more, and to make sure that they were larger.  They finally arrived today (since I guess Prime shipping now means, "we'll ship it with a fast method, but the order's going to sit in the warehouse for a week").

I guess they're made by a company Eco-Fused:
See?
I don't really care, and looking at their webpage shows that they do mainly phone cases and screen repair kits.  Fine.  Great.  But their name implies a certain level of "ecology" maybe?  Probably going to be some sort of environmental thing?
But everything comes in this labeled plastic bag.

Which contains a different plastic bag.

Which contains all the cleaning cloths, each individually wrapped in a third layer of plastic bag.
So I guess that's a "no" on that ecology thing?
It's a pretty good cloth, though.  This is bigger and thicker than the ones I've gotten from the eye doctor.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Tuesday: There was a chicken at work today.

At least I think it was a chicken.  I didn't get a good picture.

  • New Pokemon game.
  • I have not heard about this book before now, and that seems odd.
  • That's either half a billion dollars or three quarters of a billion dollars that have been removed from workers' wages by a company that even with that subsidy, still isn't profitable.
  • First up, fuck Facebook for being useless shit.  That said, they are not obligated to promote news stories that they don't want to.
  • On a similar topic, I've decided that Clickhole is superior to Buzzfeed in every aspect now.  Especially since I've seen "quizzes" over the last few weeks on BF that were intentionally misleading.  DIAF, BF.  CH is at least funny with this quiz.
  • How dogs work.
  • I just today discovered that there is a way to have sqlite automatically load extensions, and there's a useful extension that has all the math operations I want.

Monday: So apparently I hit publish last night instead of save for the temp work on solar powering Honolulu rail.

Whoops.  Also, apparently blogger is broken, so I don't know if this post will go up anyway.

Great.

Good job, google.
At least my lunch wasn't psycho cut.

Sunday, May 8, 2016

Sunday: This seemed like the best option.

Mostly since I wanted something that would cover the gyoza desire.  I had far more trouble than necessary making this mosaic.

But no where near the trouble as this one.  It couldn't sort out the photometry between these images and the one slightly more to the left simultaneously.  I just dropped that one and then it worked.

Saturday, May 7, 2016

Saturday: Wait, didn't I do this last year, too?

Yes, it turns out I did.

Anyway, it was free comic book day.  There was the Mars Attacks alien you can see on the right, and a Star Wars First Order Officer.
Let's skip ahead to when I got home to see what I got:

Free comic book day.  Again.

That Boom sampler I mentioned yesterday.

This was recommended on twitter by someone, so I'll see what it's about.

I like Oshawott.
They were allowing up to six free comics, but I didn't care about the Civil War tie in, the ROM space knight reboot, or whatever dumpster fire DC was doing.
And they had volume two of Lumberjanes.

And volume three, so hey, why not?

They also had Giant Days, which is written by John Allison, creator of Lottie Grote, greatest webcomic character ever.  I figured it was worth checking out.

Also they had volume two, oops.
Then I drove all the way across the island like last year.

And had ice cream.  Mint chocolate chip and chocolate cinnamon.  CC wasn't really what I was hoping for.

And then I saw Captain America, but at the 3:50 showing, not the 2:50 showing the ticket claims.  Considering I bought it at 3:19, it's pretty clear the ticket lady clicked the wrong thing.
It's good.  It actually makes sense, which is far more than can be said about the original comic series.  Tony needs to calm down, Steve needs to calm down, Sony did the right thing by calming down and releasing their hold on Spider-Man, who is going to make them a gajillion dollars when they make his movie.  The movie does break up the gang a lot, explaining why they're doing side stories until Infinity War in two years (also a FCBD movie, I guess, with Guardians of the Galaxy 2 being the one next year).  That kind of makes sense, as whatever Infinity War contains, it's probably going to be sufficiently dire that all the "you broke stuff!" and "you killed people!" and "you're all a bunch of dangerous loose cannons!" and "you need to be regulated!" stuff can be thrown out.  "Oh, look, it's an evil space titan.  Can we team up again and fight like we're supposed to, or is 'stop the evil space titan' something we should put up for debate?"

And then I got Greek, which was honestly like half the reason I drove out to Koko Marina again.

  •  Captain America stuff.
    • Stuff like this makes it look like the Black Panther movie will be good.
    • Agree with this.
    • A good review.
    • The first comment here sums up a lot of my thoughts: "Why would Thanos need a gun."  I'm glad I didn't get that Civil War FCBD comic, because this is just dumb.  I don't think She-Hulk is going to be taken down by a missile either.  I tried to find her getting blown up in my archive, but the art is so bad I had to stop.
  • Economics stuff.

Friday, May 6, 2016

Friday: I am glad google sent all those mapping cars out into the world.

So when the Japanese travel show goes to an onsen in Kitaakita, I can look and confirm that it's still there.

Thursday, May 5, 2016

Thursday: Yeah, shutting off the water until 1pm is totally helpful, thanks apartment.

I recently bought my very first LED light bulbs, as I needed to replace one in my kitchen, and Target had them on sale.  I also replaced my living room lamp bulb with one of them, since LED bulbs are more power efficient even than the compact florescent I had in there (which I only theoretically care about, since I don't pay for power).  I was really surprised at how much better the color of the light was after the replacement, so this evening I remembered I had those spectrum glasses.  So let's take a look:

LED on the left, CFL on the right.  That's why the color looks better, it has a far more continuous spectrum.

The other light in the kitchen, with two CFLs.

And since I was taking pictures with the spectrum glasses, a shot of the city.
There are a lot of links today.

Tuesday: I wasn't crazy last time.

I'm going to call this the "psychopath cut."  Who else would cut a sandwich into two non-symmetrical halves?  Diagonal would be fine too, because it's a common way, but horizontally in half?  WTF?

Monday, May 2, 2016

Monday: I have no picture today.

I did not take any today, and the bulk of my history photos are from last year's free comic book day or a 2008 graduation.

  • Frank Welker voices about a third of all cartoon character ever.
  • Now I want karaage.
  • Betty Bates, "Lady-at-Law."
  • Fox.
  • I was going to make some comment about people defining themselves based on certain things they believe/things they do, and tie it back to yesterday's post that is really just a reflection of the same concept, but I'm too lazy to put anything together more than that.
  • Clearly this is the most important bit of news from today.  Fucking finally.

Sunday, May 1, 2016

Sigh. Just no.

So, just because you add some numbers, doesn't mean that you've "done math at it."  Admittedly, I skimmed this blog post, partially because I hate when people decide which fonts to use, and partially because it woefully shrank a problem to "719 ÷ 1,016 = 0.707677 or approximately 71%".  As I see it, the strategy here is:

  1. Clinton has 1664 delegates today, but needs 2383.
  2. There are 1016 delegates still in play.
  3. Therefore she has to get 71% of all the remaining ones.
  4. Sanders would need to get 99% of the remaining ones to win, but
  5. Sanders is going to win.  QED.
There's also the useful footnote of "have not counted the so-called “super-delegates” because they do not vote until the convention, which you might not know because of the media’s disgustingly corrupt attempt to warp the public’s perception of the election."

Sigh.

How many superdelegates (who could totally change their minds, sure) are pledged for Hillary?  Wikipedia suggests 498.  That reduces the calculation above to 22% of remaining delegates need to go to Hillary.  That doesn't seem impossible at all.  Let's see if people who study this agree.

  • 538 probably wouldn't exist if they didn't study this.
  • Sam Wang at the Princeton Election Consortium probably study this, since it's in the name and all.  They have the likelihood of a Clinton Democratic candidate at 95%.
  • Paul Krugman doesn't technically study this, but he knows people who do, and they show that you can predict the Democratic race based on some simple demographic breakdowns.
  • The PEC has this nice examination how you can get google to do those breakdowns for you, and that that gives better results than other ways to estimate it.
It looks surprisingly like people who are experts largely agree that Clinton pretty much has this wrapped up.  Great.  Sanders can go to the convention, give a nice speech, and we can all go think about more important things.

Apparently there are counter arguments presented in part two of that dumpster fire.  I read this one even less, although I was taken by point 3 at the top.  "the fact that a recent WSJ/NBC poll shows that 58% of the people “cannot see themselves voting for Hillary Clinton,” while Sanders" blah blah because there's a link with the polling data.  For some reason, he's used the data from Q13 which considers the reaction to each candidate for all registered voters, where Clinton is unfavorable to 58%.  However, in that same table, you see Sanders has a 48%.  Not that big of a difference, given you can roughly assume half of people are Republicans, who wouldn't be in favor of either.  Q14 is more applicable, which considers only Democratic primary voters, and showing Clinton and Sanders both having 78% favorable / 21% unfavorable.  Those are literally the same numbers.  Those crazy 21% people should probably relax a bit, and consider what's best for everyone.

It looks like the comments there are part of that 21%, which is unfortunate.

"If that’s what it takes to give the dnc the message, then yes!"  No.  That's not the way to do things.  Just because you won't personally be impacted by a conservative government, doesn't mean you get to ignore people who would be.

"[...] most of the superdelegates are either lobbyists or elected officials with deep ties to the Clintons [...]"  The first part is wrong, but they're all currently elected or previously elected (or ran the DNC at some point).  Is that 100% democratic?  No.  But, consider that those people are largely people who have run on the Democratic ticket.  They have an interest in keeping the party attuned to their goals.  It prevents a charismatic leader showing up and making it so the party now has a platform plank that "people named Keith are jerks."

The final point is that not everything has to be solved immediately, and very little needs to be solved by some sort of revolution.  Who makes up the Democratic party?  "[...] a coalition that included banking and oil industries, the Democratic state party organizations, city machines, labor unions, blue collar workers, minorities (racial, ethnic and religious), farmers, white Southerners, people on relief, and intellectuals."  There's no need to be increasingly dogmatic, because the point is to help everyone get by.  Everyone works together to solve a problem that individually they can't accomplish.  Sometimes you bend what you want to get somebody else what they want, but as long as things generally improve, you accept it as the cost of compromise.

Sunday: And then I decided I wanted to drive around for an hour.

First though, since I didn't know what I wanted to eat, I went the easy route and got sushi.
My tamago was poorly constructed.

I should get the poke wonton more often.
I also saw this card today:

I understand that the national company just orders a bunch of cards, and sends them to all the local stores, but somebody has to make the purchasing decisions, and it seems silly that they don't do some sort of filtering to ensure that geographically relevant items aren't accidentally sent somewhere where they don't make sense.  I mean, the store sells Pocky and a bunch of Asian foods and candy, so there's clearly some sort of local tuning happening.
And then I decided that I hadn't driven H-3 in a while, which is a shame, because H-3 is probably one of the most beautiful drives around.  Unfortunately, I was driving, so I only have images from the scenic view.
Which I turned into this super distorted fisheye view.

And this less distorted regular panorama.  I should have done more photometric optimization.

In the top one, you can see that there are four cars at the view (mine got eaten by the panorama, so there are actually five).  The weird thing:  I was the only one there.  None of those cars had people associated with them.  I don't know where they went.  At least one of them was a rental car that should have had some tourists.
