Saturday: This was the plan all along.

It's just been delayed two weeks while I waited for my phone.  The plan was to get the phone that Saturday, and then go to the art museum on Sunday, and take comparison photos with the new phone camera.  Unfortunately Verizon sucks, and then it took a week to ship it, so it had to be this weekend.  Doubly so since I won't be here next weekend.

I thought I'd posted an image of this painting before, but I can't find it.  Anyway, here's "Cupid-like Angels Being Dicks to Birds."

Parvati's butt and Ganesh.  This is actually kind of funny if you know the story.

The bunny jars.

No tigers today, so this dragon is the Best Museum Animal today.

"Let's Guard!"

"Yes way!"
The original museum plan from two weeks ago had hotpot as the dinner of choice.  I saw this video around then, and it looked really tasty.  I looked online, and there's a place reasonably close that looked pretty good.  That continued to be the plan until I realized when I was nearly there that dinner time on the Saturday before Christmas was probably not the best time to go to Ward Center, as the parking can be tricky there in general.  I then thought about going to the kaiten sushi place at Ala Moana, but that's the same problem, just with the added benefit of not being as good as the one I go to in Kahala.  Luckily, I reached the pancake place, and that solved all the problems.

It turns out that I've been to the pancake place enough times that they recognize me.  I suspect that's because I'm not a Japanese couple on their honeymoon.  I'm not saying that's the only other people at the pancake place, but of today's guests, there was me, one other local guy, four honeymoon couples, one older couple, one three-generation vacation, and a mom-grown-up-daughter pair.

Since they no longer have the delicious calamari, I had to go with my backup meal.

Chicken fried steak, gravy on the side so it doesn't get soggy, potato salad because it's delicious, blueberry pancakes, because you don't go to the pancake place and not get pancakes, even if you're having dinner food.  Plus a big POG.
Idea totally stolen from the happy hour drink stand-up thing: POG mimosa.

Then I stopped at Nijiya next door to buy chocolate and CC Lemon, which I am super happy to have a steady source for.
I also saw these totally not Daniel Tiger cookie/candies, and crap, right under him are the snacks that Yotsuba was just eating in the comic I was reading a week or so ago.  I just now noticed that looking at this image.  Anyway, that's Shimajirou, who became popular on the internet when they found the potty training episode of his cartoon.  It's actually somewhat difficult to find a version that isn't "a parody," which in this case largely means, "pretty racist and also surprisingly sexist for no reason."
I also bought a "cute animal":
See?
 Let's open it up:
Oh!  A happy little bear!
Unfortunately, Happy Bear is also a doughnut.
OH NO!  WHO DID THIS TO YOU, HAPPY BEAR!?

OH GOD!  NO!  BEAR!
It turns out the villain was me the whole time.  And the ears are almonds.
Also I got a white kitty version for tomorrow.
In looking up the hotpot place above, I found this place as well, which has higher ratings.  Unfortunately they're not open for lunch tomorrow, so I guess that plan I just came up with isn't going to happen.

  • Pokemon Cafe.
  • Princientist.
  • First, Batman:TAS has the best art.  Second, where do you think Selina goes to buy sheets for her circle bed?
  • That's brilliant.
  • Ok, let's break this one down a bit.
    • Why would you go to a pig for your dental work?
    • Don't you eat other stuff than meat that you might need teeth for?
    • Is is smart to taunt your pig-dentist with the fact that you enjoy eating his relatives?
    • I can't think of any meat that is sufficiently tender that you wouldn't need teeth to eat.  I mean, that's kind of why we have teeth.

Wheel of Fortune "fuck you" words.

For the final round of Wheel of Fortune, they automatically give you RSTLNE, and after watching for a bit, it seems like most people choose CDMA as their other letters.  These are the words you can make without any of those letters, with proper nouns, abbreviations, single letter words, and things like "uh" removed.

Friday: Whatever.

See, I said I got pizza last night.  I even brought some in for lunch today instead of going out to get something.
I also hid $20 in an old notebook in case I forget my wallet again in the future.

  • Wow.  This is either criminally stupid, or just regular criminal.  The number of people who should be going to jail in this case just keeps going up.
  • Phil Plait is wrong.
  • I guess this guy died, and made lots of money writing calc a book?  I went to look up the book I used.  It's here.  Free.  Or you can buy a copy for $50/volume, still less than the $250 amazon is wanting for the dead guy's book.  Or you can buy used copies on amazon for $4.  If I ever have to teach something, I'm going to be sure that any required texts are either free online, or readily available in the "taco bell receipt" price level.
  • I saw this deal today too.  So now I own a digital cloud copy of Fellowship of the Ring that I'll probably never watch, but whatever, it was free and I don't actually have to download it if I don't want.
  • This I might pay for, though.  I have a lot of Playstation 1 games that I either never finished or would like to play again.  $4 seems like a small price to be able to do so.

Thursday: Oh, for fuck's sake.

It looked like it was going to be a totally normal day at work today until I was getting ready for lunch and after thinking about what to get, decided to see if I had any cash so I could go to the sushi/not sushi place.  That was when I discovered that not only did I not have any cash, I didn't have my stupid wallet.  I could have gone home to get it, and then pick up something for lunch, but I decided that I probably had enough food in the office anyway.

Probably.
And then I ordered a pizza when I got home, so it all worked out ok in the end.

Wednesday: It's like I designed parts of this phone.

First, a few pictures.  I'll have to reconfigure the image size to be the full detector, and not just the screen size.
I guess I never took a picture of my new candy box dish with my old phone.
A phone that I was going to do comparison shots with, but discovered it had a dead battery.

I had to make a new pentagon coaster from my five kinds of post-its.  I have math I thought was cool, but I'll save it for another day.
So in addition to the voice command stuff, I discovered two cool things today.  First, if I have a bluetooth device I care to trust, I can set it up so that associating with it keeps my phone unlocked.  I think I might buy a bunch of BT dongles for computers just so I can configure that for home and the office.  Second, I can quickly put the phone into camera mode by just shaking it twice.  This opens up camera mode, even if the phone is locked, allowing pictures to be taken with zero delay.  It's well done, as it locks the image gallery in the camera so that only pictures taken during that camera session are visible.  This minimizes security issues from allowing the locked phone to take pictures.

  • Political stuff.
    • Good.  It hasn't been productive in decades, and continuing it does nothing but appease bitter old people.
    • Pretty much.
    • Duh.  If Sony was smart, they'd release it onto the internet.  For free, with no DRM.  If people complain, I believe the easiest solution is simply to answer, "Oh, sorry.  We were hacked, and they stole a bunch of our data, including some entire versions of some movies."
  • The regular stuff.

Tuesday: "Hey you, Pikachu!"

My new phone arrived today, getting here two days earlier than the initial estimate.  That of course meant that I spent a large chunk of the evening installing apps, finding out it already wanted to reinstall apps from my old phone, deleting the apps I didn't want again, and generally dicking around with it.
The overlay comparison figure from this phone comparison page.
I'll do pictures and whatnot tomorrow.  Today is just first impressions.

  1. Even though it's bigger in area, it feels smaller.
  2. Because it's lighter.  That comparison says it's only a 20% drop, but it feels like more.
  3. It's also thinner.  The tapered design feels nice in the hand, and the Motorola logo on the back is a perfect resting place for a finger while you're holding it.
  4. It's faster, with none of the lag and hesitation in the old phone.
  5. It went from 35% to fully charged in the time I put it on the charger so I could eat dinner and read the internet.  The old phone would never get to a full charge in any reasonable amount of time.
Even though I always feel weird getting replacement tech (because I at least partially personify it), this has been a fairly easy transition.  Sure, there's no physical keyboard, but even ssh didn't feel that hard.

Speaking of personifying tech, Motorola has their own wrapper onto the google voice command thing, and it works even when the screen is off.  I need to sort out how to work through the lock screen (I'm sure there's a reasonable solution), but to get to that point, I needed a command phrase.  I thought and thought, and eventually decided on the best way to weirdly personify my device:
"Hey you, Pikachu!"

Unfortunately, my only mention of HY:P is this post, which I'll have to fix at some point.  In any case, the short form is that long ago in grad school, I bought a Nintendo 64 for cheap when they were on the final clearance.  I then went to buy some used games, and after selecting "Hey you, Pikachu!", I was confronted by an argument with the salesperson, who refused to sell me the game.

"Because it's bad and doesn't work."

Eventually, they decided I could buy it if I also took a football N64 memory card, which was fine because I didn't have a memory card, and didn't care that it was football shaped.  I brought the game home, plugged in the controller and the second-controller microphone, and realized that the game isn't necessarily bad, but it certainly doesn't work.  The main game type I remember:  Bulbasaur is making a stew, and you need to find ingredients.  You have to tell Pikachu what to pick up, and Pikachu responds by completely ignoring you until the sun goes down and Bulbasaur's stew consists of hot water.

In any case, other than the lockscreen issue, Motorola's HY:P seems to work fine, identifying a song I had playing and attempting to launch google's music store correctly for "what's this song" and "play music".  I'll need to learn the other commands it knows as well.

Monday: I'm tired and my head hurts.

  • I was going to do this as a big thing with power laws, using the fact that fractional subsets of power laws are also power laws and that the convolution of a power law with any integrable function is also going to be easily approximated by a power law, but I'm too tired.  The end result is that the consumable hours of music, even with the addition of song fatigue, in a world with non-degradable copies of the song is sufficiently large that asymptotic price of music is zero cents per hour.  If this means that the recording industry as it currently exists goes bankrupt, fine.  People simply will not pay more for something than it's worth.
  • Yes.
  • I understand, cat.  It's been colder here recently, too.
  • Batman.

I hate commercials.

  • The Taco Bell commercial has guy and girl walking down the street while he eats something that you dip.  From Taco Bell.  Her dad walks up, and she introduces him as her new boyfriend.  The guy then hugs the dad and kisses him because he can't use his hands due to the dippable food.
    • This is stupid, because in any normal situation, the dad would recognize that the guy's hands are full, and this wouldn't be a thing at all.  Even if he did put his hand out, couldn't the food guy just say something like, "sorry, my hands are full of food."
  • Apple wants everyone to know that their new payment thing is so fast, you'll get home in time for your surprise birthday party earlier than the surprise planners had planned.
    • First, does anyone do surprise parties outside of television shows?  Second, when I go shopping, the payment part of the transaction is a vanishingly small fraction of the total time spent.  Cutting that in (let's say) half is going to save me all of ten seconds.  Therefore, fuck you and your shitty marketing team, Apple.
  • Every car commercial trying to sell a car as an appropriate Christmas gift.  More specifically, the commercial in which a kid calls Santa via skype, and asks for a truck.
    • That kid can't drive.  Plus, he's going to ask for a boat for next year?  Boats are terrible investments.
  • McDonalds wants everyone to ask them questions about their food to reassure them that "all beef" means "only contains beef."
    • You have a bigger problem than you think, McDonalds, and this isn't going to fix it.
  • This commercial just suggested that "the perfect gift" is the TMNT movie on blu-ray.
    • This is just a straight up lie.

Sunday: I really want chicken and waffles.

No clear reason why, other than that they're delicious.  I mean, it's not like I didn't have lunch (or dinner):
And it was a super tasty burger.

Saturday: Crap, I was supposed to do laundry today.

I've apparently committed myself to getting all the different ramens at the ramen place.
Spicy Tan Tan.
This is wonderful.  I have never used the spoon before today.  Part of that is because the kotteri coats the ramen so well that when I get to the end, there's not much soup left.  This broth doesn't do that, so there was a lot left over at the end.  In addition, the ground pork is hard to get, so it sinks into the soup.  I tried wrapping it up in the bok choy, but that wasn't a perfect solution.  In addition to the pork, the bottom of the soup also has the peanut bits, so I didn't want to miss those.

Then I went to Safeway to completely forget half the things I was planning on buying.  I've also come to the conclusion that for some reason, Kapahulu Safeway is the dude-bro-iest place in existance.  It's like all the shoeless surfer jerks have nothing better to do than go be stinky at Safeway.  Plus, they have no clue how to use the self checkout machines.  They are seriously worse than old people.

One of the best views of Diamond Head.
It's actually so good that I've mentioned it before.  Also, last time I went for ramen, somebody was sitting on the steps where I took this picture drawing it.

Thursday: At least tomorrow's Friday.

I had a 1024 bear at the end, but I had to do a push right, and that screwed up the game around 60k.

Wednesday, December 10, 2014

Wednesday: It sucks that it's going to take a week, but at least in a week, I'll have a new phone.

No physical keyboard, because those don't exist anymore.  That will make doing ssh a bit more of a challenge.  Still, it'll be nice to have a phone that doesn't need to constantly be charging.  Even better: it'll be good to have a phone that doesn't get confused when I ask it to do challenging things like "answer the stupid phone, or at least make it stop ringing."

I couldn't find this song posted yet, which is a bit surprising, because I know I've heard it and looked it up before.  In case you were wondering, it's not the cool animation that makes this great; it's the wonderful synth sounds.

  • Huh.  I can actually buy three albums from Passepied on amazon?  That's surprising.  I guess I'll be listening to new music at work tomorrow.  Also: nice job on counting, amazon.  You list five albums in the individual track widget.
  • That's a good point.  The Marvel movies have basically infinity stories to choose the best from.
  • I think I have this book, but I don't know where I put it.
  • Pyramid Head.
  • Three gifs showing why Kaguya should win best animated feature this year.
  • Yes.  Basically, if Florida hadn't been so stupid in 2000, or if the Supreme Court wasn't filled with horrible people, the world would clearly be a better place today.
  • Speaking of horrible people, I can imagine no way in which Dick Chaney dies that isn't too short and too pleasant for him.
  • This story was just depressing.

Tuesday, December 9, 2014

Tuesday: Those cats just live there now, I guess.

Composite of two cats (one twice) arranged to make the bushes match.

Monday, December 8, 2014

Monday: I'm just going to cull all the depressing stories from the link set for today, I guess.

I saw this guy today at work.
I also saw a cat after work again today.  Wait, no, not cat.  Cats.  Remember these two cats?  Yeah, they have a family now, and I think I counted four kittens.  They're not tiny kittens anymore, but they're clearly not fully grown.  This is a problem, because here's a link telling you why it's a problem if you can't figure it out.  Also they kill and eat birds, and some of those birds actually belong here.

  • Animals.
  • Not animals.
    • I can't wait for this to fail spectacularly.  No one likes Aquaman.  No one is going to suddenly decide Aquaman is cool.  It's never going to happen.
    • I would totally have wanted to play with an Egyptology Lego set as a kid.  On a more related to the comic point, thinking about it now, I always had my "Lego guy" that had the coolest hat and the coolest pirateship/spaceplane/supercar.  That guy was my Lego proxy.  I can't have been the only one, so I'm kind of wondering why Lego has taken so long to make sets that include multiple Lego people types, so everyone can have their favorite proxy.
    • This is just being a jerk to fictional children.

Sunday: This entire thing is basically "Who the fuck cares?"

Part 1: Lunch and Adventure

I woke up today not knowing what I wanted for lunch.  After random thoughts, I remembered that when I was a kid, we went to Red Lobster, and they had nachos with shrimp.  This put the idea for fish into my head, and so this happened:
Yep.
While eating, I remembered that I haven't driven around the island in a long time.  So I skipped my usual wander around the pier,
Although I did stop to watch this plane taking off.
And came up with the plan to drive on all the highways in order:
As shown.
I couldn't take pictures of everything, but I saw a car with a "SCOOBDO" licence plate, a chicken,

Windmills.
I eventually made it over to the Kaneohe scenic point:

Mosaics don't work well when the stupid sun is in the way.
It's much greener there than it was last time I took pictures there.
There were even purple flowers.

Part 2: Milo Manara

Did I mention this Milo Manara thing before?  I don't see anything immediately on searching, so I'm guessing no.

First, I think this is a better picture, because there's this whole Hawkguy thing about dumb art.

Second, if you google image search Milo Manara, and then use the gimp to circle in red each image that comes up that could be considered porn,

Like so.
You come up with 13/25 images matching that criterion.  This is probably not the best person to do a cover for a comic you're going to want to sell to everybody.  I would have thought this would be like rule #1 of "how to not run your company like a dummy."

Third, that link in point one reminded me that MM did do a series/whatever of Human History that's pretty good, if you go in expecting that there's probably going to be some porn bits, because of point two.

Fourth, this in turn reminded me of this video by Zbigniew RybczyÅ„ski of Bolero played over a stylized history of the Soviet Union, portrayed on a staircase that appears pseudo-infinite due to video effects.

Fifth, because this is a link that could probably go down in the link section, but since the images are also NSFW, it might as well go here, this link.  I'm reasonably sure that La Vie Parisienne wasn't an all-ages periodical, so the fact that they had these covers is a bit different.  I'm also somewhat surprised that there isn't a compilation volume of Chéri Hérouard's art available.

Part 3: Team Rocket

They're totally not related.  In fact, they're the first couple that I learned had their own shipping name (RocketShipping, which to be fair, is a good pun).
Which was helped when Nintendo allowed this to be included in The Electric Tale of Pikachu.
And yes, that's a picture of Jessie pregnant, and yes, I knew it existed before I started this blog post.

Part 4: Links.

Saturday, December 6, 2014

This is just stupid.

"She explained she had nearly died in the crash and that the Talosians, who had never seen Humans, had had no guide in repairing her smashed body. Hunchbacked, old and ugly, severely scarred, but in good physiological health, she preferred to retain her illusion of beauty on Talos IV rather than live among Humans and die away."

I mean, it's not like we dig bones up out of the ground, and stick them together and know about fucking dinosaurs, right?  This means that fancy smart telepathy aliens aren't actually that smart, are they?  Did they just look at all the broken bones and think, "Yeah, I'm sure these sharp shattered bones are how they're supposed to be."  "Hey, Frank!  Do you think she has a hump?"  "Probably.  We don't have humps of course, and have bilateral symmetry, but she's probably all donked up naturally.  Just shove some shattered bone fragments up next to her neck, and we'll call it a day."

I know I've made fun of TNG multiple times.  It's still vastly better than the crap TOS put out.

Saturday: Well, that didn't work exactly as planned.

Today's plan had two equally important parts.

Part 1: Curry.
As you can tell, this part went exactly as planned.
Tonkatsu, spicy curry, added mushrooms.  It was actually busy today, but since I went at actual lunch time instead of the middle of the afternoon, that makes sense.  I had to wait for a seat, which took something like five minutes.  This was such a long time that another group couldn't bother waiting.  One other guy was seated at the same time as me.
This is his plate after he left.
 He basically inhaled his lunch.
For reference, here's what I had left at the exact same time.
Next, I had to go to do part 2.
I saw this bus along the way.  You should know how to drive by now, bus.
Part 2: Try to Get a New Cell Phone.

This was also my first chance to see the current state of Ala Moana, as the Verizon store is right next to it, and they have the most parking.
Wait, what?  Ala Moana doesn't have six floors of parking!
That's right, it doesn't.  It has eight now.  This means that it's even crazier that people were fighting over parking spaces on floors 2-4.  Six was basically empty.  They do need to work on getting to the mall, though.  They had a single elevator, which isn't that convenient.
This is kind of blown out due to the dynamic range, but they're still doing a lot of construction.
Anyway, walking to the Verizon store, I discovered that we now have a Lawson:
Yes, I did buy a Dr. Pepper just so I'd have a receipt that proves that we have a Lawson now.
According to that wiki page, Lawson opened on July 7, 2012.  This suggests how long it's been since I last went to get a new phone.  Looking closer, I can say that I got this phone on May 3, 2012.  So yes.  It's more than time to get a new one.

Of course, I have Verizon, and they're dicks.  It turns out that way back in (wait for it) 2012, Verizon decided that if you have the unlimited data plan that they don't want to offer because they're (again) dicks, then they're not going to do the phone subsidy thing anymore.  So, if I want a new phone, I have to pay full price for it.  You're a bunch of dicks, Verizon.

In any case, it's probably not the worst thing.  I was planning on getting the Moto X, and in store they only have "white with bamboo back" and "black with holy shit, wtf is this, why did you make the back bumpy fake leather, oh, I see, you're calling this 'football' because you're fucking morons.  Exclusive design my ass."  Neither of those is what I wanted, so I'd probably have to wait to get a phone delivered anyway.  Since that would mean waiting anyway, buying my own online with their builder thing means I can get a "black on black with maybe purple highlight colors, because that has a nice contrast without being yellow or something."

This still is going to cost $500, which I'm not happy with, but it's probably good to have a phone that I'm not constantly shouting at and having to charge.  I'd also lose the physical keyboard, but again, "no shouting."

Not getting a new phone blew up the second goal of the day, so I decided to wander around the mall, starting at B&N.
So I bought a book to go into the pile of unread books.  I think this is number six.
Then into the main part of the mall:

Where I saw whatever the fuck this is supposed to be while riding up the escalator.
I wandered by the Disney store, which as I suspected, is basically just the Frozen store now:
No one wants Kristoff.
And then finally back up to my car, after navigating around the construction back to the one elevator that goes up the parking garage.
There's a sailboat in this picture.

Friday: Fucking really?

I've spent all day increasingly feeling like crap.  It got to the point just before I went home from work this evening that I was sneezing about every 30-40 seconds.  I burned through half a box of kleenex as well.  Given that I had two or three things I planned to do over the weekend, this kind of sucks.

I'm starting to think I should get a candy dish for my desk at work.

  • Bear.
  • I'd probably watch it.
  • My calculation comparing this to the 777 suggests that the coach seats are about 1.5 inches wider, running about 20 inches.

Thursday, December 4, 2014

Thursday: Ok, so I've gotten a bit behind, I guess.

I finally got caught up on Adventure Time on my DVR.  Watching it on the DVR means that I know exactly how long I've been neglecting AT.  "Adventure Time/Ocarina/6x12/EP012462650340/2014-07-17/Thu Jul 17, 2014 (04:00 PM)".  Oops.

Not a bad set to do a marathon, though:

  • Nemesis.  Not bad, but I'm kind of over Pep But.
  • Ghost Fly.  Worth it for Beemo's final line.
  • Everything's Jake.  Probably one of the best Magic Man episodes, because MM isn't hardly in it.
  • Is That You?  Prismo again.  Also totally weird.
  • Jake the Brick.  Best episode about nothing ever.
  • Dentist. What?
  • The Cooler.  I think Peebles shutting down her spy network is a bad idea.
You're weird, cows.
  • Owl.
  • Squirrels.
  • Pasiphaë and the Bull.  To be fair, though, she's immortal, so it's (let's say) less weird that it normally seems.  I mean, just think about all the shit Zeus pulled.  Balanced against that, Pasiphaë isn't the weirdest person in mythology.

Wednesday: I forgot that case of water in my trunk, didn't I?

Google apparently isn't planning on sleeping at all on New Year's Eve.

Tuesday: oh yeah. Work.

What?

Monday, December 1, 2014

The Thanksgiving links.

First, the Taylor Swift parody I couldn't find while on vacation:

The J-pop song that I heard today that is apparently an ending song for the Dragonball reboot/redo:

Monday: Return trip and food.

I woke up, caught the shuttle to the airport, and randomly wandered into this line:
I couldn't figure out why they had to check my boarding pass at the start of the line, but it turns out they were doing it to make sure I belonged in this line.  I did.
 I was then hungry.
Pastrami and swiss on rye with mustard.  This is the best breakfast for travel days.  Also a pretty great breakfast on any other day.  I do not understand why the deli was basically empty while every other food place was packed.
Then I got on my flight home, and was surprised to find one of my coworkers was on the same flight.  His flight yesterday was cancelled with all of the problems.  This added a lot of people to my flight, so the empty seats I thought I might have next to me were taken up by people.
Including the girl I've sketched here.  It may be hard to tell, but after taking a nap, she decided to pull her big grey sweater back on.  However, she didn't bother taking her head off the plane pillow she was using, and so ended up like this, with the pillow and a few strands of hair being the only things emerging from the neck of the sweater.
And I was hungry again.
So I went to get a burger while at the same time getting a few groceries at WF.
