Monday: An eclipse.

It wasn't total in Alameda, and the clouds made it look a lot like it wouldn't be visible, but that turned out not to be the case:

Although there were no shadows, and the eclipse filters didn't show anything, the clouds acted as a fairly decent filter for the eclipse.

 I was kind of surprised that it came out so well.

Later on, through the not-so-clean hallway window.

 Today was also Ramona's first day of school.

I never went to a school with this right behind the back doors.

After picking her up, it was conveniently close to lunch time.

Delicious Monte Cristo for lunch.

 But all things end, so it was time to catch the BART to the airport.

Switching over at UN/Civic Center station as Julie was heading to work.

SFO was easy to deal with, as I was early, and pre-check is a good thing.  It's unfortunate that I was the only one listening to the RWBY soundtrack, as that probably would have helped everyone else not be so slow about everything.

The flight was fine.  Bringing youtube videos to watch is easily the best strategy for dealing with ~6 hour flights.

Sunday: another last full day.

Which is always sad. Doubly so when the next visit isn't scheduled yet. Thanksgiving? That'd be a bit of a wait.

They was another raid. I did not catch the ice chicken.

Then KBBQ.  It wasn't originally on the plan, but it works.

 Although two bulgogi was too much.

So dinner was salad. To try and make up for it.

Saturday: a post actually on the day it happened.

No one got up in time for Korean BBQ.

So we did dim sum down the street instead.

I finally leveled up by evolving trash Pokemon.

Then a raid, which still suck.

Followed by dinner at a Greek place.

Some of the veggies were to soft and overcooked, but the rest was super good.

Then a quick stop at the bookstore. Because I need more books.

I have so many questions about this. How? Why? Did he bring rails? How many drugs were involved in this? What the absolute fuck?

Friday: Pandy

Dinner was Cafe Jolie. It was yummy, but I didn't take any pictures. Whoops.

There was some gym stuff, too.

And, since I spent a lot of time with a certain person, I looked up to see if I could find pictures of Pandy the panda.

Thursday: another last day.

But it's good not to do work so much. I still read some of a paper to try and get comments, but that's not too difficult.

I also saw what kind of important school supplies are needed now.

And had a yummy curry burrito. More things should come in burrito style. 🌯

Wednesday: Raids are still stupid.

It's a dumb system, and requires external coordination, but since the game is unwilling to add any such coordination, it's broken by default.  If there was a way to click on a raid, choose a time, and note that you plan to be there at that time, people could see when people were planning on going to do it, and there'd be an aspect of planning that isn't just "show up and hope," or "use various random forums to try to do what a simple set of buttons and a histogram would do easier."

I forgot how Bowie Lucifer was in Sandman.  I like the later style much better.

Also I forgot to take pictures of like everything today.

Tuesday: this is largely my preferred style of vacation.

I think it is mostly due to the fact that my replacement schedule feels so overbooked and hectic, that simply having time to sit quietly is so much fun. For a wide range of "quietly", I guess.

The art in Saga is one of the best parts. This single panel tells so much that words aren't necessary.

I have forgotten how much I enjoyed Sandman.

I did more than read comics today.  I just didn't take any pictures.

Monday: so I didn't do that much today.

I did the thing, and did some quick work stuff.  I should probably send an email tomorrow or something.  Also read some papers. Probably. Something like that.

Evolving trash Pokemon is my strategy to get to the next level.

Sunday: Sh. This was totally on time.

Brunch was at Neptune's, where I got the same thing.

 I didn't like the syrup quite as much this time.  The spice didn't match the sweetness quite right.  Still good.

Then there was some editing stuff, and some printer configuration stuff, and some maybe going to an anti-fascist thing, because that's a thing we apparently have to plan for now, but then we just decided to be lazy.

I finally was able to get a decent screenshot of our team.  I need to level up.

I didn't take any pictures of dinner, but that's probably in everyone's best interest.

Saturday: travel success.

I saw this at the airport. I think they could have phrased it better.

It was foggy is San Francisco when I landed.

 Then I had trouble sleeping, while reading tweets of the garbage that happened while I was traveling.  Things continued to be bad today.  But at least I'm in a happier place with good people.

Good people who don't want to wait that long for brunch, so Cambodian food.

 Spoiler alert: Cambodian food is pretty good, but when your tummy is planning for brunch, it's a bit of a surprise.

Then a gym.

And an evolution so I could have a strategic attacker.

 For a raid. Which I didn't catch. But there was another one later.

And I finally caught this jerk.

I did not take a picture in time for the appetizers.

Which meant I was never going to finish my entree.

Then another gym.

No comment.

Friday: Everything is fine.

I use this too much.

Thursday: TFW the day before you leave on vacation, you discover something is just all broken at work.

All broken.  I don't think I'm sorting that problem out before I leave.  Oh well.

And then someone was wrong on the internet, so I went to FRED to make a plot, then lost interest, because people are dumb.  The important point is that developed economies do not grow at huge rates, because they're developed.  The easy stuff is done, so you have to work extra hard to keep growing.  Countries that are rapidly modernizing, like China, have lots of room for growth, and therefore can support large growth rates.

• Cartoon Selina is still the best Selina.
• I didn't know this was a thing.

Wednesday: When you order a book knowing absolutely nothing about it, and it arrives and is like twice as big as you expected.

Whatever.

I also have to fill out a jury form.  I guess they mail them to a bunch of people, and then decide who they want to call?  It seems like a waste of time.

The cheese fries were ok, but they cooled off and got soggy, and then weren't so great.

But all the food options at the mall that aren't in Shirokiya are kind of bad.  Or don't take cash.  Or take more time than I really wanted to spend since I still had two stops before going home.

Tuesday: I have too many things to do before I leave.

I'm sure they'll get done, or it won't matter, or whatever, but there's a lot of stuff to do.

Monday: Finally.

The xkit people were finally able to get an update out that makes tumblr usable again.  It doesn't always work perfectly, and it will sometimes not load all the buttons, but reloading a page occasionally is a far better state than "have to click and select from menus and click so much omg why so many clicks aghl;aslug".

Of course, once I noticed that, I discovered that my RSS database was corrupted, reloaded from a dump, discovered that that dump was corrupt too, and reloaded from yesterday afternoon's dump.  So I had to burn through a day and a half's worth of posts.

Seven years ago, I was on vacation on Maui.

Maui has nice coasts.

And angry beaches.

And waterfalls that don't look great on seven year old phone cameras.

• They fired that dumb guy at Google, but fuck that guy, here's an article that makes me want to get her book, even though I'm trying super hard not to buy a lot of new books.

Sunday: I made a phone call and vacuumed. That counts as productive, right?

And I got ramen.

It's been awhile since I had ramen.  They've redone the menu and raised prices, but that's how it goes.  I also think they've changed the recipe for the umakara, maybe?  It seemed better than usual, but maybe it's just that I haven't been for too long.

Safeway still has the best view of Diamond Head.

I didn't buy anything at Safeway, because after picking up some stuff, I decided I didn't want to wait in a mile long line because they don't want to open more that four lanes.  So I grabbed my bag from the basket, dropped the basket on the ground, and left.

• I had never heard of this until today.
• I know very little about Game of Thrones, but I don't think that matters to see how cool this is.
• Everything is better with Sailor Moon.
• Chronological is the best order.
• Imagine a future in which we have super smart AI robots, and all they want to do is be our friends.  This would clearly be the best future.

Saturday: Or, alternatively, I could not be productive today.

I decided I wanted pizza.

So I got some pizza.

I did take out the trash, so I guess that counts as "productive."  Then I sat on the couch and watched a bunch of youtube videos.

And then Twitter told me important facts about frozen produce.

And I've decided that I'm going to wait until they fix xkit before trying to use tumblr anymore.  They're apparently working on a fix since tumblr is a dumpster fire.

• Today's the Curiosity rover birthday.
• The Sky Factory stuff is really the best they've had in a long time.

Friday: I felt like tacos.

I left work, not quite sure what to do for dinner, and thought "I should just pick up something quick."  So then I drove to Kailua for tacos.

Because that's totally quick.

• All of this.  If you know the other side is actively working to discriminate, you support your side.  Even if they aren't perfect, they are at least not ACTIVELY WORKING TO DISCRIMINATE.
• It's the simple answer.
• Cat, what did you expect?

Thursday: Today was also garbage, but at least I only have a week until vacation.

I am looking forward to it.

I was not looking forward to this.  The bakery by work has been closed for a month, and I assumed that that meant that they were closing for good.  It looks like that's the case, and it's because the head baker had a heart attack.  That's super unfortunate, because they had super good food.

Wednesday: Today was garbage, and I hate everything.

First fun thing: my home computer suddenly became super sluggish, and the load shot up to 100.  I came home from work to see what had happened, and it had crashed completely, turning itself off.  From the logs, it appears that some asshole was trying to connect to ssh, and it was taking effort to reject all those connections.  That's at least my best guess, considering that everything else seemed fine after rebooting.

Although the log data of rejected connections doesn't point out an unusual amount of activity.  Although the sudden jump around July 13 corresponds to when I bought a domain name from Google.  Great.  Wonderful.

Second fun thing: guy who decides to a) stop right in front of a crosswalk, so I also stop, thinking he's stopping for a pedestrian, like you're supposed to, but no, this asshole is just bad at driving; and b) just turn left from the right lane, forcing me to stop so I don't kill us all.

Third fun thing: tumblr in general.  Why is it so hard for them to not break everything every other day?  The fact that the standard suggestion is "install xkit", because the site is so unusable that you need to use a third party extension to make it not a pain in the ass.  In other words, xkit is broken again, and I'm annoyed.

• Stephen Miller is a racist, but that's not a big surprise, given that he works for a corrupt administration that is full of racists.
• I completely missed this book, but it's cancelled now, so I'll have to pick up the trade.

• I miss having a president who isn't a disgrace.

Tuesday: I only crashed a computer twice today.

Not like I was running stuff that I really wanted finished or anything.

I didn't think I'd have a picture for today, so I took this when I got home.  I totally wasn't trying to avoid the awkward thing of opening my door while my neighbor opens his door.

But, then I saw that this administration continues to be worse than useless, and is planning to investigate to see if white people are being discriminated against in college applications.  Which is dumb, so I did the standard thing of "asking the government about the data, since I'm pretty sure the government has the data" and:

Lines show fall college enrollment by broad racial category, taken from this table.  Dots show total US demographics, taken from the last table of this wikipedia page, because I'd already parsed and formatted one government table, and this one already had the same broad categories.  The main caveat is that looking at the subsequent section, you can see that younger age categories are less white.  However, I was not able to find a full year/age/race census split, so it's hard to plot a "college age" population.  Still, broadly speaking, white people have historically been over-represented in fall college enrollment, as has the Asian/Pacific Islander category, although that over-representation drops when you note the recently available Two-or-more category.  Conclusion: this administration can't do an hour's worth of work to discover their thesis is likely incorrect.  Alternate conclusion:
