Monday: Wait...Koffing?

Tonight I've been trying to catch up on things on my DVR.  It's quickly becoming an impossible task, as the DVR can record far more that I can watch, especially when I leave town for nearly a month.  In any case, I watched an episode of Pokemon from October.

For some reason, Ash is fighting a Koffing.  He has trouble with this, despite having spent a year of his life brutally almost-murdering Team Rocket's Koffing.  In any case, Koffing is always happy, as shown by this series of vidcaps.
Ash!
Vs. Gym Leader I Didn't Bother to Catch the Name of!
KOFFING!
KOFF?
ING!
Koffing!
KOFFING!
Koffing!
Koff-koffing!
K...k...koffing?
A stupid strategy!
But it works!
Koffing! Return!

Sunday: Tomorrow I have to go to work.

I guess having nearly a month of vacation and travel has to end sometime.  Unfortunately it ends with an early morning telecon.

I did spend today in proper end-of-vacation mode.  I was going to send out emails about work stuff. I didn't.  I was going to go eat Mexican food. I did, but only after two hours of procrastinating.  I probably should have been somewhat productive.  I didn't, and don't really feel at all bad about it.

Here's some squirrel stuff:

Saturday: Sushi!

Today was a good day at the conveyor belt sushi place.  The only thing I had to order manually was the unagi.  Everything else magically appeared hot and fresh on the line for me to grab and enjoy.  They've also changed the menu slightly, as there are now a lot of new things that I've not seen before.  I think this means that next time I go, I'll have to study a bit more and order some of those new things.
Salmon, ahi, Texas roll.
Chicken karaage, that same ahi, ebi-fry.
King of lunch: unagi.

  • Huh.  Well, that's so fucking obvious that now I feel dumb for not coming up with it before now.
  • :(  I knew immediately after that popped up on my RSS feed that it was about Neil's dog dying.
  • Om nom cookies.
  • Here's my thought on how to improve AAS: A number of people mentioned to me that they wanted to see session X, but were already going to session Y.  After sitting next to the ADS booth all week, and hearing the tutorials on their new searches and the wonders of creating author connection webs, the solution seems obvious.  For each author in a session, construct an author web for all their papers, and repeat for all sessions.  Next, construct a list of best simultaneous sessions by attempting to maximize the distance between sessions.  This should split similar topics onto different days automatically, without being really that difficult.  I mean, we're astronomers.  We should be using math to solve difficult problems.

Friday: Living in the future is wonderful

It's really the little things that build up until you realize that you live in a fantasy sci-fi world that would have seemed insane just a few decades ago.  However, before you start, it's good to eat a big breakfast:
The french toast wasn't super great, the bacon was wimpy, and the potatoes were kind of light on flavor.  In any case, eating breakfast after a week of waking up at 6AM and not eating anything substantial until like 7PM is a glorious thing.
First crazy thing: staying in a hotel that has its own fake lake, despite being across the street from the ocean.
The black boxes in the middle were where I tried to crop out a chair reflection, and didn't have enough inputs apparently.
Next: seeing sea creatures in an aquarium and taking the equivalent of six rolls of film willy nilly.  I only have pictures of the cute sea creatures in this post.
"I refuse to sit still, so this picture is the best of the thirty you took."

I'm 99% sure these seals were choreographing this.
See?
Then, just because: panorama shot of Long Beach harbor, including the hotel I stayed in, the Queen Mary, and the cranes for the port, which according to the movie I watched at the aquarium, is the fifth largest in the world.
Simple horizontal version.
Ring version, because I like these.
It was then time to fly home, on what was possibly the best plane I've been on, ever.
The green light is the standard power outlet available at each seat.  I didn't use it, but only because of the next cool thing.
The best inflight entertainment ever.
I had my choice of something like 300 TV shows, 100ish albums to listen to, and 90 movies to watch.  This gave me a chance to catch up on the summer movies I could have gone to, but was too lazy to see.  Quick reviews:
  • The Avengers: basically as good as everyone claimed.  Well written, well acted, nice pacing.  I kind of want to go back and watch the non-Iron Man movies that I skipped.
  • Dark Knight Rises: I thought it sucked.  I know that lots of other people think that these Nolan Batman movies are the greatest stories ever, but they're just simply not Batman.  My Batman is the BTAS Batman, who is constantly driven, and constantly fighting evil and corruption.  He doesn't slack off and take an eight year break and then blab his secret identity to every other character in the movie.  This movie also had another horrible flaw: being an hour too long, and filling that time with useless boring crap.  In any case, I'm going to go with Mask of the Phantasm being the best Batman movie ever, if for nothing else than for this bit from Alfred that encapsulates the concept of Batman better than anything else I've seen.
  • (The first half of) The Amazing Spider-Man: Not bad, although I only saw up to the point where Uncle Ben dies because the plane landed.  I'll have to catch the rest someday.  I'm not really happy with the Dr. Connors being friends with Peter's parents, but I've never liked the Lizard much anyway.
After landing, collecting bags, navigating the taxi stand, I arrived home to this:
Well, not quite that.  It turns out though that you can order pizza online using your cellphone while taxiing from the runway to the gate after the plane lands.  Then, if you get it for delivery, the pizza will arrive at your apartment just a few minutes after you get home.  This may or may not have made the security guard think I was a wizard.

Finally, through the magic of "lying to computers," I can post this blog post a day after it should have gone up, and still make it look correct.

Thursday: Conference Final Day

I took another picture of this guy today.

Then I let this happen at the booth. We had the pretty picture, and they needed a backdrop for their music video. I'm reasonably sure no one would mind.

Goodbye, Long Beach.

Wednesday: Conference Day 3

Still sleepy.  There's still one day left, although it sounds like a lot of people are leaving tomorrow, so I think I'm going to have to do some discussions over email when I get back home.  Maybe I should figure out a decent linux video chat program at some point.

I like Captain Chuck.

You will never in a million years pick up one of those boxes with a two-prong claw.

This shit right here. WTF did you fill the ethernet port with epoxy, Hyatt? Is there a reason other than "we can sell you wireless at $10 a day?" It's also great that you have the wonderful deal of "1 day = $9.99, 3 days = 29.97." Wow. A whole zero cents of savings for the three day deal.
As a side note, what's up with this shitty power outlet?  Why put plastic shit in it so that it's nearly impossible to plug something in?  If you're going to make it that fucking hard, just don't put in a plug.  There. Now we've saved everyone from wasting their fucking time.

Tuesday: Conference Day 2

I'm like Day 4 sleepy and it's only Day 2.  This is not a good sign.

My talk was today, which wasn't quite as good as I hoped it would be, but given that I still had people ask me questions after the session, it's entirely possible that I'm just being difficult.  Now to get the paper submitted before the end of the month and write a manual for the code.  Woo.

These seats by the elevator look like toilets.

I didn't bring my real camera, and it turns out my cell phone sucks at taking night shots.  Anyway, Long Beach from my hotel room.

Monday: Conference Day 1

Talked to a lot of people at the booth, looked at a lot of posters, grabbed a lot of book lists from the publishers.  I didn't see any books that looked particularly good this time, as all the ones that do look interesting are already sitting on a shelf at home.

Also, this thing is the first thing I see when I walk into my hotel room.

I'm unclear if the hotel room/the wall is attempting to tempt me into eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  In any case, it seems like an odd choice of art.

Saturday: Clearing tabs

"I'm really tired, so I think I'm just going to take a nap right here."

"Me too!"

"Me...oh...:("

Wednesday: Circles of Apollonius

Basically.
Done in ham fat on water.
It turns out that today was BBQ day, and I failed to take a picture of the BBQ.  It was tasty, which is probably part of the reason why I skipped the picture part.

Tuesday: A new year

Still have bears, though:
"Hey! It's cold out here! Can I have some cookies?"
